My daughter, 12, wants to buy herself a laptop. She is aware that it is going to cost her quite a bit of money but is prepared to save what is required for something decent. But what us decent? Can anyone give us some advice.

She wants to be able to use the internet, run windows Vista and just general PC things like ms office etc. One that is going to last a while and something that is fast with plenty memory/ram (I'm not really sure what I'm talking about but I'm sure someone can guide us both).

    Hi Snapelover,

I too am looking for a laptop for my 12 year old and one for my 15 year old. I have decided to go for one of the Toshiba Satelite in the first post which has cashback of £50 at the moment. I think it has everything that a teenager needs with the exception maybe of a built in webcam. If it looks good when I get it then I plan to order a second one. I think I may need to buy some student package for word, excel etc as these don't come as standard I don't think.

I thought the same upon seeing the microdirect site, but actually, it just seems that Toshiba have a different form for each month the offer's on. This month's form expires on the 30th (purchase date), so there's still more than enough time if you want one.

    Hope this helps.

Just saw this (Acer Aspire 5720) when I got in from work & checked out the hotukdeals site. Seems a bargain, ordered one for my daughters forthcoming birthday...if she's good she gets to keep it, if not, it's gonna be mine!

The upto £50 cashback from Toshiba is still on till the end of the month, as it was extended, check out laptopsdirect.co.uk and they ahve details and application forms on their site.

Acer laptops tend to have webcams built in, but alot of the main brands now have them built in, but dont pay over the top as you can pick them up for next to nothing these days.

As for MS Office dont pay the over inflated prices!!! go here http://www.openoffice.org/ it is a free office suite that can open, edit and save in MS format. It is totally free and made by Sun Microsystems (they made java big on the web). My company uses this on store workstations to reduce the Microsoft Licience costs.

Martin should add this to his weekly news letter as it is a great alternative to the MS Office product.

If you go with this product perhaps you could spend the extra on a slightly higher spec laptop??

Fancy sharing the secret with me too? If it does have 12months warranty it sounds like a good deal.
