I expect there will be many users who may be going to Germany for the World Cup this year.

Any tips?
Good Accomodation? Camping? B&B's
Methods of travel? Ferry? Air? Rail? Road?
Match Tickets?
Useful Web Sites?

So many subjects to think of...

I'm hoping to travel by Ferry to France or Belgium and driving up to Cologne and staying in my tent for a few nights.

From this thread we may be able to share our discoveries for the advantage of all users

I'll be posting as much info as I can find on this thread

Dave - I have tickets (won in the last ballot) for the Ecuador v Poland game (!!) on the opening night in Gelschekirchen. All the budget airlines had been holding on before releasing their summer schedules until after the draw on the 9th Dec. Surprise surprise the draw is done and the flights were released, and went through the roof for Germany.

A nice little loophole I've done is to fly to Amsterdam, and then get the train from there to Germany. I've got return flights to Amsterdam for the first week of the tournament for £47 return including tax. The train from Amsterdam to Gelschkirchen is only 2hrs and costs 30 euro.

Ryanair- Prestwick to Weeze (Nr Dussldorf) are 90 -100GBP return inc tax during the world cup.As Scotland chose not to take part it may be cheaper flying from here although we reserve the right to refuse admission on the return journey should England win it :D

Here's the German rail website in English

I think camping might be very popular, some sites might however start restrictions on fans so pretend you are doing a reserach project on Germany's Cathedrals or something and don't travel in large groups.

    Hi

I am being totally thick here, but how do you get the tickets for games in the first place. My OH and son are football crazy and I would love to be able to surprise them with some.

  • hi

you will need to visit fifaworldcup.com

then select tickets, you only have until the 15th jan to order tickets

dont worry that you are ordering at the last minute as a draw takes place at the end of jan to determine who gets the tickets

they do however prefer payment by mastercard as these are 1 of the sponsors

    good luck
  • I'm staying in Stuttgart for 11 days throughout the group phase.

I booked my flights from Manchester to Stuttgart through https://www.hlx.co.uk and my hotel through the Stuttgart tourist board. I found hotel availability was pretty tight even though I booked about 2 months before the draw (we knew we had tickets to a game but not who was playing in it...turns out to be Holland vs Ivory Coast)

If your games are in Berlin or Leipzig it could be worth getting the Ryanair flights to Poland (Szcecin, Posnan or a few other places) and then getting the train if you are finding flights hard to get hold of, although I can't imagine this will be the case.

I'm going to apply for the second ballot of tickets before Jan 15th too, the potential second round England vs Germany game is hard to resist.

    Hi

I have asked for tickets to the 1st 3 matches England are playing in so fingers crossed they get some ( any!) of these.

Thanks to The Cat for that help!

  • we have booked(four of us) a 6 berth bungalow on this campsite, http://www.worldcupcamping.com/main.html ,for two weeks starting 11th june,we start our journey flying with easyjet, liverpool to amsterdam,£24.99,on the 9th, then stay overnight in amsterdam,£90 for a quad room, then catch the train direct to frankfurt the next morning,£50,will get there in plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere of england v paraguay and hopefully a ticket or four, then we stay overnight in frankfurt ,£60, before moving onto our base for the fortnight, where we have travel laid on for the england games,(or any world cup game for that matter), from the campsite to the venues, and if we decide to stay on the campsite theres beer tents and big screens to watch the games on!we have had to take a educated guess for the 2nd round and pray we win the group and play in stuttgart on the 25th,where we are staying overnight and flying back to manchester,£125, on the 26th,all told it as worked out cheaper than i ever thought it would.
