    Hello,

Where I used to work they did the Shoebox appeal every year, with Samaritans Purse. Work used to pay the £2 postage per box.

Last year we saw footage and photos of an employee's Parents who went out to Romania to hand out the Shoeboxes with Samaritans Purse - it really put everything into perspective.

The childrens little faces when they got the shoeboxes - things children in this country would disregard, they were so happy to receive. We were told that one girl it was her Birthday the day she was given her Shoebox and that was the only present she would get. She was so happy!

As we do this every year I have started putting things away whenever I see things reduced, or 20-odd pence prices. I bought some of the Morrison's Value toothbrushes the other day (4 for 28p) All the supermarkets do Value ranges now - Home Bargains are another good place.
  • Does anyone know of a non-religious organisation that does this kind of thing? I've lived and worked in the developing world and I can imagine how well received these boxes are, but I don't want to be involved with religious propaganda.

  • Does anyone know the deadline for link romania please?

Other than Link Romania ( which asks for family boxes) I haven't found any other organisation that I can send the boxes I've filled with (had been looking for something just aimed at children as I filled mine a while ago with items for girls)

I think shoebox appeals are great but I would NOT recommend anything with the Samaritans purse. More info on them here. Instead I do shoeboxes for link romania and local toy appeals (google "toy appeal *your home town*" and you'll soon find one close to you).

Can I ask why you wouldn't recommend them? Is it due to religious issues or something more sinister?

I ask as I am about to take 6 boxes into my kids school next week :o

Does it matter who you give the box through as long as a child in need receives it?
Link Romania are a christian company but they clearly state on there website that the boxes are not given in a religious way and children will get regardless of religion.
Christmas is a christian event and a celebration.

The deadline for Link Romania is 5 December if sending direct. Though if your dropping off to a local agent, they start collecting tomorrow until 27th Nov. So call for details.

    I quite agree.

I dont see this as a sinister form of evangelism, I see it as very kind charity workers trying to help other human beings and bring some cheer into their otherwise miserable lives.

I feel quite ashamed when I think of all my children get, how we race around to get the next 'hot' toy. FOr some kids, a pen and pencil and paper means they can go to school. And a soft toy means something to love and hug at night time.

I would like to know also. Had a quick look at the link - am I missing something? The Link Romania looks good but not a collector near me.

    Warning:

Operation Christmas Child is not run by The Samaritans!

It's run by Samaritan's Purse, which is an entirely different, fanatical evangelical organisation run by the Reverend Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham (remember him?).
