Freecycle (merged)

Hi All

Just thought I would bring freecycle back into everyone's minds. I am sure a lot of people know about it, but for those who don't it's well joining. I only joined a few weeks ago so I hope no one minds me bringing it up, even though it is quite well known.

Freecycle is a free local group (there are groups in most areas) where people give away the things they don't want anymore. The idea being that someone's junk is someone else's treasure, and it reduces the amount of rubbish going into landfills.

I have given away loads of old furniture and exercise equipment recently as well as smaller things like packs of cards and children's car blinds. They have all gone to other people who have used them themselves rather than sold them on, and I have had some really lovely emails thanking me and letting me know how they have used the furniture etc. But in turn, I have got some treasure too! They include a trampoline, a pasta maker, a pet carrier (for when I bring my new rabbits home) and an electric knife.

I have definitely given away more than I have received, but I really believe that what goes around comes around, and it is a really good feeling to know that someone else really is benefitting from something that has been gathering dust on top of my wardrobe or in my garage.

To get more information, just go to http://www.freecycle.org/.

Hope everyone gets as much out of it as I have.

  • I found out about the wonders of freecycle thanks to MSE. I haven't received anything yet, but have given away animals (both of which I had emails of photographs sent through a few days later) and baby stuff. I currently have baby toys and baby clothes listed and have had a great response, just find it hard to chose who gets them!
I do get annoyed though when I see peoples 'wanted' that says they can no collect so please deliver!
:beer:Proudly paying as little as possible for stuff since birth:beer:

I know what you mean about choosing! I never choose someone that I think is going to sell things on if I can help it though. I gave away a huge stack of cookery books and I had so many people wanting them that I split them up, but gave most to a lady who wanted them for my local secondary school. I found myself wishing I had more books to give away. I think freecycle can be a bit addictive :)

Most people use freecycle in the spirit they are meant to in our group but we have got two people who listed six or seven wanted posts one after the other and don't offer anything. One of them always specifies that whatever she is asking for "must be in perfect working order". Some people are pretty cheeky but luckily we don't have many like that.

Freecycle is a great thing and i have gave away things on it but it is annoying when you see the good quailty items going to the same people all the time..or when people post the same items on 2 or 3 different boards and you simply do not have a hope of getting any ..i spend a lot of the day at my computer and if i get a freecycle email if its something i need or could use i try but i never have much luck .

our local groups don't allow you to post on several groups simultaneously - you are supposed to try locally first and then if no takers, try another group.
I think freecycle is a great idea but a few people seem to get on their high horse about it sometimes!
It is entirely up to you who you give your stuff to or whether or not you reply to a wanted! People can ask for things but don't always get! Gives us a good laugh at their cheek though!
The principle is : reuse, recycle and avoid dumping in landfill things that are still use-able! It is not a charity and, in my view, if someone else has the nous to sell it on then good luck to them! If I offer something it is on that basis.
Is a great way to find things that have no value in themselves but are invaluable to you - eg spares for old items that have broken or mislaid (my blender/grinder broke so I offered the goblet and someone was very happy to take it as they had broken a goblet and couldn't get a new one!)

If I was fussy as to who has my unwanted items then I would take it to a charity shop.

    Anyway, happy freecycling!

I did a car boot sale last weekend, and the stuff I wasn't that fussed about went into a box marked 'Freecycle, help yourself'. Loads of people thought there was a catch, but I was just happy not to have to pack it all away again!
