I'm dying for a fish pie... as I'm chinese i dont actually know how to make this (but if egg fried rice is your dish im the queen!!) so i've looked up some recipes on bbc.co.uk/food....

unfortunately these are all 'luxury' ones ie expensive cuts of fish  so does anyone know what sort of fish/fish cuts i should buy to get a nice rich fish pie on the cheap? i like salmon but i think it might be expensive, know anywhere cheap to buy? what should i look for at the fishmongers? is it better to go to mongers than supermarket? i thought a salmon pie filled out with some plaice and some cod might be good... what other 'white meat' fish are there that are quite cheap? does the fish need to be cooked?

 im such a novice!

  • Have a look at Fish and other seafood in the mega index.

Fish pie can be made as cheaply or as expensive as you like. Use what you can afford and what ever your personal taste is.

An easy one to start with is frozen fish fropm the supermarket, white sauce, peas and topped with mash.

I'll check the recipe thread for you as well to see if there are any ideas :)

    EDIT: Fish Pie

I'm not British either, I'm Italian so pasta is my speciality (and other less known dishes).

But egg fried rice? Oh heaven! Oh delight! :j :T

  • Karnam,

I think that Salmon is one of the cheapest fish that you can buy nowadays, that being said you can get little frozen blocks of Coley and Cod at all the supermarkets.

I always use Coley for a fish pie, it turns a lovely white when it's cooked. It was definitely the cheapest on the fresh fish counter in Tesco the other day. Plus Tesco have started doing a value pack of frozen white fish fillets, there's loads in there for less than 2 quid.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

  • Last fish I bought was 2 bags for £5 in Iceland. Coley and haddock. Very Nice too!

I always look out for reduced fish on the fish counters, then freeze it for when i need it, i often put a couple of different types of fish in a fish pie, depending on what i have in the freezer!!!!
