I used to use coinstar but I now count the coins, bag them and take them to the bank myself - I've worked too hard to save to pay that kind of commission to be honest0

£120 we had, NO WAY was i giving coinstar 8%
that was a long night of countingProud to be dealing with my debts

8% is just too much ..i asked a woman in asda if they would take it off my hands once as i couldnt get to the bank. She told me no probs asda has to pay to get change themselves so i would be saving them money as well as myself if i changed it with them ...mybe try your own asda/tesco etc to see if they would do this for you ....you wouldnt pay 8% on your mortgage would you ?0

Can't believe we have a pro-Coinstar post on a site about Money Saving!!! The amount it costs you in commission is almost two YEARS worth of interest in a bank. And just how much work is it to count and bag the coins?

Well my intention wasn't really about the coinstar things.. it was the fact that I got £5.19 out of half a pint glass of pennies but I can see why people would avoid them because of the 7.9% it takes off you. My problem is I'm one of those people who cannot be bothered to count all my change, put it all into money bags and take it to the bank when I have enough.. I like to see an immediate result and the fact that it was money we didn't really have (If you see what I mean, finding it down the back of sofas etc!) I don't mind losing 7.9%!Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

Or put another way - 41 pence:DI am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

The HSBC bank near my works has a machine you just pour all your change in to and it counts it out for you (like Coinstar) and doesn't take a penny. I key in my First Direct account number & sort code and it pays it straight in. No bagging up or counting it myself either. Cool.
It's worth asking if it does it for othe accounts for other banks too.
However I used to use Coinstar at Sainsburys to get some cash off my shopping and didn't care about the percentage as otherwise it just *was* going to sit there in a jar on my shelf for EVER!Bank Balance: In the black for the moment.
Sainsburys Loan: Cleared July 2010
Credit cards: AMEX Airmiles Card: direct debit set to clear balance monthly

I would never ever ever just give my hard earned money over to a machine counter!!
However I just let my change build up....once there are ten pennies they are exchaged for a 10p , enough silver for a pound coin, it gets changed!
Every tenner gets banked. I get interest on those pennies! The down side is you need hardened resolve not to touch it when you are broke. But then I might have emptied a penny jar too!0 -
whats good about coinstar is that it also gives you the choice to donate your coins to charity if i remember rightly? or did i just dream it lol"You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need"
live simply so that others may simply live
