What's the deal?
DVD players, once hi-tech gadgets have now become cheap boxes; now starting at an incredibly low £10.
The cheapest available
Update 28 Nov 10am: This morning Argos knocked a fiver off the price of its two DVD players below, making them just £9.99 each in-store. If you want one, you'll have to be speedy as the MoneySaving weekly email is sent to over 1.5million people, so stock is likely to sell out quick.
- £9.99: Mikomi DS-5778C or Mikomi DVD287, in-store at Argos. Using Argos' 'reserve and collect' service, two Mikomi DVD players (Mikomi DS-5778C & Mikomi DVD287) are available for under £10. Both only support region 2 coding, but according to techie MoneySavers, these can easily be converted into multi region to play non European DVDs. Both come with a remote, with batteries supplied for the former, which also is the smaller in depth and height. Alternatively, you can order these online to be delivered for £14.94.
- £12.97: Onyk in-store at Asda. 100,000 of these players are on sale across Asda's stores nationwide. MoneySavers have reported that it's region free so you'll be able to play both UK and US DVDs. Once they're gone, they're gone, so check your local Asda still has some in stock before venturing out.
-
£14.98: Matsui in-store at Currys (out of stock online). Currys has a silver Matsui multi region player complete with remote control. It's not available online, but some are lurking about in-store so double check with your nearest Currys first.
After a DivX DVD player?
A DivX player will allow you to play downloaded content on your telly, be it music, video or Jpeg images; you can simply burn it (save it) onto your computer's CD/DVD recorder, then play it on one of these special players.
-
Online at Pixmania, £27.10 delivered. The BIOSTEK XS-260 has multi-format capability and has a built-in dolby digital decoder and composite out. Unfortunately it isn't multi-region (so you can only play DVD films bought in Europe). The only slight negative is while Pixmania is part Dixons/Currys chain meaning its very legit, feedback on its customer service isn't the best.
- In-store at Argos for £27.99. The Bush DVD2051DIVX is available, but use 'reserve and collect' to save one before going in-store. It has rather a nice mirror effect finish, region 2 coding and comes with a battery filled remote.

re: "according to techie MoneySavers, these can easily be converted into multi region to play non European DVDs" - how is this done? is there a link anywhere to info on this?
Thanks!0 -
Go to http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion to read up on this.
Or go to http://www.dvd365.net/?hacks/bush.htm and try the hack for the DVD-2523
Multi-Region:- Turn On the player and Eject the disc tray
- On the remote press 2, 8, 1, 2 followed by Enter
- This gets you to the engineers menu
- Press Down until you reach COUNTRY CODE and press Enter
- The current region code will change to four dashes (----)
- Input one number (0=Region Free, 1=USA 2=Europe, etc) and press Enter again
- The new region code will now be displayed. You can exit by just pressing the Eject button once more

- £14.99: Mikomi DS-5778C or Mikomi DVD287, in-store at Argos. Using Argos' 'reserve and collect' service, two Mikomi DVD players (Mikomi DS-5778C & Mikomi DVD287) are available for under £15. Both only support region 2 coding, but according to techie MoneySavers, these can easily be converted into multi region to play non European DVDs. Both come with a remote, with batteries supplied for the former, which also is the smaller in depth and height. Alternatively, you can order these online to be delivered for £19.94.
If you search the Argos site for DVD287 instead of using the link then the player shows as priced £9.99!
When you click to view the individual item details it stays at £9.99 and you can click buy/reserve with the price staying at £9.99.
If you use the original link, the price will show as £14.99 and will sometimes appear in the basket at £14.99 and sometimes at £9.99.
If you end up with it in your basket at £14.99, remove it from the basket then type DVD287 in the search box at the top and re-add the item
You can also use this link directly to the player at £9.99
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500000701&langId=-1&searchTerms=5335457&x=0&y=0Mobilez

If you seach the Argos site for DS-5778C or use the original link then the player shows at £14.99
If search for Mikomi DVD and then sort the results "Price: Low to High" then the DS-5778C also appears as £9.99 - but when you click to view the item details or add it to your basket, the price goes back to £14.99
If the DVD287 sells out it could be worth doing the search above to see if the price drops to £9.99.
The following link does the search above:
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?pp=20&s=Price%3A+Low+-+High&storeId=10001&catalogId=1500000701&langId=-1&q=MIKOMI+DVD&x=20&y=10Mobilez

Seems better value to buy a DVD player with 5.1 analogue audio out and some 5.1 speakers than to buy a home cinema system... anyone know of cheap DVD players with 5.1 output?
This seems like a good deal:
H&B DX-3365 HD DVD Player
£ 34 Inc. VAT Shipping fees: From £ 7.10 Inc. VAT
http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/548605/art/h-b/dx-3365-hd-dvd-player.html
but delivery seems a bit much!
I'm sure there are better deals out there...0 -
