Hi all
I really want to have a go at making my own cake toppers but really am clueless as where to start!
I've had a look at the crafty arts website. What are you're suggestions for colours for skin and dress? I recall someone saying that the ivory was quite dirty looking and to go for another colour?
Also, what 'equipment' do I need?
How much do I need to order?
What is the difference between Fimo and Sculpey?
Will they keep forever once they're made or do they have a shelf life????
And the biggest question of all -
HOW DO I DO IT????????????????? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
What sort of things do you all use for supporting the figures?
Please, please, please pass on your hints and tips for this as I'd love to be able to do it!!!!
Thank you!

Hi nat - will help as much as I can here, my figures are shown in the DIY wedding thread.Hi all

I've had a look at the crafty arts website. What are you're suggestions for colours for skin and dress? I recall someone saying that the ivory was quite dirty looking and to go for another colour? I just used white. My dress is light ivory ad the difference between them is negligible. You could mix a little yellow in if you wanted to try and get the perfect colour
Also, what 'equipment' do I need? I bought a small set of modelling tools when I ordered the fimo clay. They were around £5 for the set. Handy for shaping. Apart from that I used scissors/cocktail sticks and a pencil for shaping.
How much do I need to order?
It depends how many figures you are going to make. For a basic bride and groom I would recommend large flesh, white and black packs. Then whatever youe wedding colours are, get the pack of that, then green (for bouquet leaves) and any other colours you think you may need.
What is the difference between Fimo and Sculpey?
I have no idea :rotfl:I just ordered FIMO because I heard it was better.
Will they keep forever once they're made or do they have a shelf life????
Apparently, once they are baked you can keep them forever. Mine have been sitting in my cabinet for a couple of months now and still look the same.
And the biggest question of all -
HOW DO I DO IT????????????????? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
There's the million dollar questionI measured strips of paper to the height I wanted my figures, then divided it up into head/body/legs. Then I started making the figure to correspond with those guides. I started with the flesh, then 'made' clothes to wrap round them. The hair is quite fun to make, and the flowers are easy.
What sort of things do you all use for supporting the figures?
I used cocktail sticks pushed through mine to attach the head to the body. In the groom I used them again to attach the legs to the body. I made them to stand so they are self supporting. Just make sure when you put them in the oven you check they haven't fallen over. My OH's figure fell and had a big indentation in his head, which was a pin to repair
Please, please, please pass on your hints and tips for this as I'd love to be able to do it!!!!
Thank you!

Another couple of q's!
Did you make legs for the bride or is it just a big lump of clay under your dress??? Lol!
Also, how did you make the hair?

LOL - just a bit lump of clay. I figured if you can't see it, then it doesn't matter:D
Also, how did you make the hair?
Teeny tiny little strands, rolled out and stuck on to make a hairline
How did you attach the arms to the body?
I just pressed them on, and flattened the tops of the arms a little. They stuck pretty well
I really am grateful for your help!

A bit like my own legs! Lol!
How long do you have when making the figure before you have to put it in the oven? Can you do a bit and go back to it or do you have to do it all in one go?
Thanks again!0 -
I think I left my first one for a day or two before I baked it. I never added anything else to it, but it still seemed soft enough.
I think the main problem with going back to one later is where you store it - make sure it's in a dust free area and obviously that it is strong enough to support itself.
I don't know about leaving it for days on end whether it would dry up or anything.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. Can I ask, what shades did you use for the skin and hair?

For the skin I used light flesh (43)
For the hair I think it was Golden Yellow. (15) It looks quite dark in the photos but is much lighter really.
I wasn't bothered about trying to match the hair colour exactly, it's a caricature image of myself, so it doesn't have to be perfect.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. Hiya, First of all, I second all of the expert's (Louise's!) advice.
In addition....
Fimo/Sculpey will never (or so they say) dry out, so you can leave it for as long as you like. BUT, as Louise said, don't leave it in a dusty place. I had read to leave them in sandwich bags to protect them, but they still got some bits of dust on them. Baby wipes will sort this out (I ran out by the time i went back to mine  but used them before. Just be gentle) Once you get into it, you'll probably finish them in one go (if time allows) as it's very addictive.
For Sculpey (if you use it), use Beige for the skin and Vanilla Creme for the dress - the "Ivory" jut looks dirty
I made mine by making the body out of foil, so - in effect - they're "stuffed"!! Makes them lighter and you use less clay. (the heads are solid though, and H2B's shoes)
Hope this helps!
P.S. love your buttonholes you're working on!0 -
Hi Snugglepants!
Thank you for your advice! I really do appreciate it! Can't wait to give it a go!
Thanks for your comment about the buttonholes too!0 -
Hello--I'd like to make little curved tiles out of Fimo or Sculpey for a dollhouse. My question is--how much would I need?
If I roll a 2 ounce block through a pasta machine, how many square inches would I have?
Thanks!
