Reward scheme Airmiles has changes its T&Cs, meaning if you’ve built up a stash, but haven’t earned Airmiles in the past two years, you could lose the whole lot. Luckily, a quick trick will save them for you (plus potentially bag you a free return flight to Europe).
Will I lose my miles?
This applies to anyone who holds over 500 Airmiles, and hasn’t accrued any in the past two years. Unless you earn at least one Airmile in the next six months, your whole stockpile will disappear.
In addition, if you have over 500 Airmiles and haven’t accrued any in the past twelve months, then it’ll cost you £30 if you want to redeem your Airmiles for any rewards. Again, you can prevent this by earning one more Airmile.
How do I earn an Airmile?
It’s pretty easy to earn an Airmile; there are various options:

How do I earn an Airmile?

- Got Tesco Clubcard points?
If you’re a Tesco Clubcard holder and have a stash of those, you can convert 250 of them into 60 Airmiles, via the Clubcard Deals website. This is actually one of the most efficient ways of earning Airmiles. - Buy Fuel from Shell.
If you have a Shell Driver’s Club card (you can sign up via the link, for free), then you can earn Airmiles when purchasing fuel from a Shell station. You’ll have to buy 20 litres of fuel (costing £18 - £20 ish) to earn one Airmile. - Can I earn Airmiles on a credit card?
The big losers from this change in T&Cs are Natwest credit cardholders who used to earn Airmiles, but stopped when the scheme ended in April 2007.
If you want to use a credit card to earn Airmiles, the right card is now Lloyds Duo*, which also gives 1,500 miles (worth a free European Flight) when you spend a tenner on it, and book a hotel via the Airmiles website. Useful info, but there's one vital piece of info missing from the above that is a major problem for those ppl with airmiles that expire soon - all these methods take a significant amount of time to reach your airmiles account.
For instance, Tesco clubcard vouchers are only issued once a quarter, ditto with Shell petrol. Also I'm sure I read in the small print of the credit card deal that the miles earned come as a voucher and are not added to your actual airmiles account!
From what I've read on the airmiles site, the quickest way to earn airmiles is to use the airmiles online shopping page to click through to ebay or John Lewis etc. and make an online purchase (£10 = 2 airmiles on ebay). However this will still take up to 35 days to credit your airmiles account.0 -
So how do you save your points if you have got Airmiles spread over several Airline Loyalty cards, for instance we have points on Virgin, Continental, American Airlines and soon to be KLM. tyIf at first you don't succeed - destroy all evidence that you tried.0

correct - Airmiles is owned by British Airways, but the airmiles you collect from BA and other airlines are not linked - unless you earn miles on one of th eairline linking programs such as oneworld or skyteam or star alliance - in which case miles earnt by member airlines can often be used with other member airlines.AIUI these are all completely separate "air miles" schemes, and "Airmiles" as referred to above (sorry I forgot the capital A) does not work with any of them.
The only way to protect the AIRMILES (R) is via petrol at shell or similar as Martin states.0 -

Good point on the 'once a quarter' issue. However, Airmiles has confirmed that you get 6 months to earn your one extra Airmile, so the Tesco and Shell methods will work (though mr-b's suggestion of shopping through Airmiles website works too)

Morning all,
I too got the dreaded use "em or lose "em letter about our Airmiles - 2500 - not added to since we told Lloyds TSB where to put their credit card and swapped airmiles to Shell points.I went online and found we could use them with Condor Ferries for our hols in Jersey this year - hoorah - a saving of £150 on the total.......................Oooops they forgot to mention the £30 surcharge to "reopen" my account as it had been "dormant".................what a ripoff !!

I have spoken to Airmiles who say the Airmiles are safe until Airmiles advise by letter that you need to add more miles or risk what you have already. Is this your understanding?0
