    I'm sure you were a big fan of John Prescott.

    Presumably you're too young to remember a time when labour politicians came from the constituencies they represented and hadn't done degrees in PPE.

    No wonder so much of a GP's time is in effect wasted and so many people have difficulty getting an appointment..

    It's difficult to get an appointment because we have far fewer doctors per head of population than most of our international peers and we have to employ additional gatekeepers to keep patients away from them.

    As soon as they arrived in parliament I bet the accusations of hypocrisy started - 'he earns 3 times what his constituents do - what can he possibly know about x, y, or Z' (copyright Eric the Bee).

    Not sure why it's so important that labour MPs have to look, sound and be from the same town as their constituents. Tory MPs are no more representative of their constituents but doesn't seem to attract the same attention.

    I apologise for diverting from the thread main topic but it seems that some with little knowledge persist in unfounded claims, as with the below who thinks that GP's time being wasted is a myth.

    I'm beginning to think that this thing about GPs time being wasted is actually a myth. Maybe one perpetrated by lazy MPs and the Daily Mail who don't want to address the root causes affecting the NHS. What's the proof? I know people from all walks of life, some now deceased, and don't believe they've ever wasted a GPs time. If there are some localities where time wasting has been proven then some specific local action can be taken.

    Yup, we're back on the NHS again. I'm beginning to wonder why the Brexit thread seems to be a magnet for the topic of the UK health service.
    Amongst my oldest and best friends are a married couple, both GP's.
    Since you will not accept anecdotal evidence or claims of GP's time wasted in UK media, try the following from UK-sourced medical publications.

    https://www.keylocums.com/blog/gps-time-wasted-re-arranging-referrals

    http://www.pulsetoday.co.uk/your-practice/access/gp-group-releases-200-accounts-of-patients-using-general-practice-inappropriately/20009530.article

    https://www.medicalprotection.org/uk/for-members/general-practice/new-gp-articles-display/how-to-deal-with-trivial-requests-by-patients

    https://www.gponline.com/10m-gp-appointments-lost-dnas-year-warns-gpc/article/1424483

    From just one of those links :
    “I have had a mouth ulcer for two days”
    “I have had a runny nose for the last half hour”
    “I have a scratch on my arm”
    “My baby’s snot is too green”.

    GP's are no more perfect than the rest of us but to suggest that as a profession GP's don't experience widespread timewasting for one reason or another is plain wrong.
    It's difficult to get an appointment because we have far fewer doctors per head of population than most of our international peers and we have to employ additional gatekeepers to keep patients away from them.
    Oh look, another one who thinks the only reason appointments are in short supply is because "It's difficult to get an appointment because we have far fewer doctors per head of population than most of our international peers" - and by doing so is ignoring all other reasons.
    Like the increase in the number of people with multiple long-term conditions which is set to grow from 1.9 to 2.9 million from 2008 to 2018, increased incidence of diabetes, or an increasing elderly population.

    That's besides the statement being a lie as the following shows:
    https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.MED.PHYS.ZS

    Latest data, UK physicians per 1000 people 2015:
    UK = 2.8
    USA = 2.55 (in 2013, their latest)
    Japan = 2.3 (2012, their latest)
    South Korea = 2.2 (2014)
    Saudi Arabia = 2.6
    These are all G20 countries. Yes some have more but so too do some have less.
    France at 3.2 is not vastly different for example.

    No wonder the UK finds it so difficult to recruit, train and retain GP's if the derision seen in these posts alone is anything to go by.
    Talk about shooting yourself in the proverbial foot; "There's not enough GP's but we don't think you need "gatekeepers" or have any wasted appointments is not exactly what I would call encouragement.

    Thanks for providing those links from highly respected and disinterested sources(!) on patients wasting GP time, plus some of your own jolly anecdotes.

    I'd be looking for an impartial statistics-based source rather than info from one or another lobby group mind you.

    Then you go for it and find some.
    Only ................ try doing it on the right thread please?
    You know, the one you are posting on in DT, here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5771057
    Rather than keep posting in this one which is supposed to be about Brexit.

    Yes, it's probably going to get far worse.

    Why does it make you so angry when someone (correctly) suggests the UK doesn't compare well in terms of number of doctors per head of population?

    If you look at the World Bank data in map form you can see that the UK (& Ireland) have the lowest number of physicians of any European country apart from Poland, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro.

    Am I lying? Engaging in deceit?

    There are wasted appointments. You've given some examples which are probably wasteful but I think there are two issues here

    (1) the free at point of delivery nonsense just encourages wastefulness. You'll always have a decent queue when you give away valuable stuff for free. I suspect that's a root cause and, rather than address it, we compound it by adding additional gatekeepers and making the free service even more expensive.

    (2) I suspect GPs are copping out when it comes to telling people they're wasting their time. It must be difficult to tell someone they're a malingerer without putting them off attending for genuine reasons in the future. A good example is the recent ad campaign about antibiotics

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2017/10/23/nhs-patients-urged-stop-asking-antibiotics-television-campaign/

    Antibiotics are prescribed by doctors. If there's is/ was an issue with them being over prescribed or prescribed for complaints which are treated by antibiotics that's down to the doctors. Do doctors really prescribe antibiotics just to 'get rid' of people rather than say no?

    I know we like anecdotal stuff here. My MIL attends her GP once or twice a week - she has done so for around 10 years. She's been a heavy user of NHS services for the whole of her life and has recently moved house to be closer to the surgery.

    She has a few ailments but they're mainly imagined and she'll probably live to be well into her nineties just like her mother who, incidentally, never had a well day in her life either. AIUI during her long career of milking the NHS I don't think a GP has ever suggested she could do with losing 4 stone, stop eating crap and perhaps stop watching telly all day. Not even a mental health referral (she had anxiety issues over Christmas when the doctors were shut).

    I do wonder if her GPs (she's outlived quite a few) just aren't equipped to deal with the 'worried well'. Some well meaning family members have tried to discuss this but fail at the first hurdle - she's ill - the GP says so.

    Back on brexit...

    David Davis keeps his job - just shows what a weak hand Mrs May has.

    How does it show that?

    Davis has shown to be a liar at best and potentially a complete fantasist. This has been recognised by Mrs May and he's been slowly sidelined. If she didn't have to play a delicate game of brexiteers and remoaners she could've sacked him and at least have got someone basically competent in place.

    But she does have to play the game and has to keep an incompetent in place.
