A couple of mine were at that price. Great value and a load of fun!

Winter tyres and some weight in the boot.
Got a mate to sit on the top of the boot. Wouldnt recommend for arctic expeditions though.

You're making me want to dip into my savings and call the car dealer back..

The s2000 is the best car out of the three in terms of driving.

My son had a Honda S2000. It is a fabulous little car with a very high revving engine, but can be lively in the wet. Bearing in mind the OP's comment : I don't really know much about motoring and being able to plug in my ipod is more important to me than brake horse power, I think the Mazda would be a better car for her.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Why did Honda stop making them?

The Honda s2000 had a life cycle of nearly a decade. An exceptionally long time for any car model. I'm guessing EU regulations on emissions played a large role in the ending of the s2000's life and also meant it just wasn't economically viable for Honda to continue manufacturing the car.

Tax bands, which were not so prevalent as before means high performance cars such as the s2000 have a VED of £500/year. Owning any car, let alone an older high performance car, is very expensive in the UK when you factor in fuel costs, MOT, insurance, tax and maintenance. Hell my gf whose in her mid 20's pays an odd £700/year for insurance, MOT, tax and maintenance on a 10 year old plus 1.0 litre Toyota Yaris, and that's not including petrol costs!

I may be wrong, but I thought they were discontinued because of stricter emission laws in California. My son lives there, and he said that driving his S2000 on the Freeway, dodging between the enormous trucks, wasn't for the faint hearted.

Yes, likewise to what I said, EU emission regulations. Yes the s2000 definitely is not for the faint hearted. It's pretty much a full on sports car built for the track. They also hold their value extremely well. I have been tracking the price of them in the last few years and they haven't dropped by a penny.

I thought I would update this.

I went back to another branch of the same dealership this morning were they had an identical model to the one I had test driven in a different colour up for the same price (£16995) and asked what their best price was for cash. The salesman asked me what I was prepared to pay and I said £16000. Nothing to trade in. He said the best they could do was £16600 as they were (and I quote) only going to make £60 on the sale.

I then drove 25 miles to a non franchised garage where they had another MX5 same limited edition but a 2012 model with 18000 miles on sale for £15495. I offered me Hyundai in part exchange. He said my car was the most pristine car he had seen of its age and offered me £4350 part exchange. He also knocked £100 off the screen price of the Mazda so I got the MX5 for £11145.
Assuming that he made a profit on both sides of the deal, it makes the Mazda main dealer look rather expensive.

Anyway, I'm happy with my purchase and am looking forward to collecting it next Saturday.

Thanks for your input, everyone. :)

    Congratulations on your purchase!

I;m not sure why you think the Mazda dealer deal looks "rather expensive"?

The Mazda dealers car was a year younger, so that easily explains the £1500 difference.

The Mazda dealer was knocking off £500 but this dealer is just knocking off £100?

Had your new dealer knocked £500 off he'd have been giving you £3950 for your car, which whilst better than the Mazda dealers £3500 isnt a million miles away.

Also, have a look at the invoice when you pick your car up - i would full expect the dealer to have written the price back on his car and on yours so you will see the true value of your car to him - not the over inflated trade in price to make you feel good.

Don't rain on my parade! :p

All I know is, with this car I won't have to raid my savings and with the other one, I would have had to.

I just hope it's not piddling down when I pick it up next Saturday so I can drive home with the lid off.
