I don't understand this as on the Tesco website is states that collecting the clubcard points will stay the same. How have you been getting 1 point per £1 the standard rate is 1 point per £2.

Early Tesco cards were 1 point per £1 spent in store and 1 point per £2 spent elsewhere, this has got steadily worse as Tesco gets bigger for new applicants.
I'm going to phone tomorrow to see if they are trying to change this with the "new" card.
  • muddyboot - my tesco platinum changed to worldmastercard last May on the renewal date.
I too have held the card for ever and receive 1 point per £2 spent elswhere. As far as I can tell (and obviously they don't make it easy for you!!) my points are the same. I spend roughly the same as i always have on this card and the amount I receive in vouchers hasn't changed. I have to admit I've never phoned to check what I'm receiving as I feared they might say I shouldn't be on the 1 point per £2 and switch me to the new rubbish rate!!

What has irritated me over it all though is because you used to get x4 in deals it was effectively 2% cashback, now they've switched it to x3 it's nowhere near as good.

I have had my card for years and was getting 1 point per £1 etc. I was of the understanding that when they changed the criteria some time ago it changed for everyone not just for new applicants.

How do you know what points you are getting as I have no idea how to work that out?

I too have one of the original Tesco credit cards and am still getting 1 pt per £2 spent anywhere and 5 per £2 in Tesco (the usual 2 per £1 + the extra 1).

There is no easy way to see how many points you are getting per £1 but one way you can work it out is: when you get your clubcard statement you will see that you get x points from Tesco personal finance (maybe name is changing to tesco bank?). Unless you have a loan or other finance with them this will be the points earned from your credit card in the last 3 months. Then get your credit card statements for the same period and see if the no of points tallies with the amount spent. (here you will have to remember that Tesco collection periods will not be the same as your credit card statement periods and that you only get a point for every full £1 or £2 or £4 spent depending on which rate you are on. (so spending £1.99 will only gain you 1pt if you get 1pt per £1 and nothing for the other two rates.etc).

    It's only a game

  • Woah peeps!! Don't mix up the "Clubcard" with the credit card!!

As far as I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) the points work as follows:

    CLUBCARD
1 point for every pound in store
1 point for every pound at the petrol station (1 point for every £2 if you don't use your tesco credit card)

    CREDIT CARD
This is calculated completley seperately and relates to ANY spend regardless of where you spend it, as follows:
1 point for every £2 spent
(This is what I get - I seem to remember this depends on when you first applied - see the letter for what it will be on the 'upgraded' card.)

    USING BOTH
If you use your credit card and clubcard in store (both on same card) you get 1.5 points per pound (to be pedantic, if you spend £3.99 you get 4 points if you spend £4 you get 6 points, as it works on whole pounds and you only get the point on the credit card (Financial Services) on every whole £2 spent (i.e. you don't get half points)).

HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW ITS BROKEN DOWN?
When you get you're clubcard statement all the points earned from your credit card are in a seperate section under financial services (or something like that).

I too am skeptical that this is really an "upgrade". If someone at MSE could get the definitive answer as to why on earth its being done - they surely aren't wanting to just give away money. Methinks it might be a way of clearing out old schemes and deals cheaply and streamlining, but other posts seem to suggest other possibilities also.

When do the actual points get credited to your clubcard account then when it appears on your statement or when payment is made?

Might upset some Olympic fans if they want to use their only Visa card for official olympic purchases because they only accept Visa.

  • I received this upgrade letter too, and it seemed to me that I would be getting less points than I do already. I phoned the upgrade hotline number and got through to what sounded like someone in South Africa. I couldn't understand what the woman was saying to me when I challenged the number of points, and she didn't even ask me for my account details anyway. I then tried calling the UK helpline number of 0845 6040406. I spoke with a very helpful lady who confirmed that I receive 1 point per £2 spent anywhere, 2 points per £1 spent in Tesco (inclusive of double points) and an additional 1 point per £2 spent in Tesco for paying on the Tesco Credit Card. Therefore, a £2 in Tesco gives 5 points. The upgrade letter states that I will receive exactly the same terms as I currently do, but says I would receive 1 point for every £2 spent on my card. I phoned the hotline number again and got through to a much more helpful person who said that I would receive 3 points per £2 spend in Tesco, and 1 point per £2 spend anywhere else. When I told him that I currently receive 5 points per £2 spend in Tesco, and the new deal is only 3 points per £2 Tesco spend, he went away to speak to his supervisor. He came back on the phone and said that the letter I had received was aimed at any regular Tesco Credit Card user, but because I had the older Tesco Finest Platinum Visa card, my current deal would remain the same. I have therefore asked him to send me written confirmation of exactly how many points I would receive if I upgrade to this new offer based on my old terms with Tesco, rather than a generic letter. He said he will do this before the deadline date of 20th February, so I'll just have to see if the letter turns up in the post now. If it really is going to be the same for existing customers on the old terms and conditions, then I think it's worth upgrading for the extra 650 bonus points each year.

I think you are right to get it in writing. I have rung Tesco customer services before and nine times out of ten they go away to speak to someone else and I am never confident that what they are telling me is correct.

I think I might write a letter to them today but I am not hopeful I will get a reply back in time.
