How is someone supposed to stop the onslaught of delivered mail for someone who no longer lives at the address, if RTS mail marked "gone away" is destroyed rather than sent back to the originator?

I was bombarded with mailshots from a well known catalogue company for the previous owner of my flat. After the first couple of months (when I redirected it) I started RTSing it. Couldn't understand why it kept on coming.

I hear you bogof babe, we get mail for 5 different previous owners of the house. I have started RTSing it and I'll be gutted if all the catalogue crap keeps coming. It's such a waste to dump those big catalogues into the recycling. We are still sending mail on (bundled in an envelope) on to the previous owners 6 months later. Some people are just plain lazy to even change their addresses let alone get a redirect from RM.

Yes, I'd pop a note in next time you forward their mail asking them to arrange re-direction or they make arrangement to collect as you won't be sending it on any longer. Six months is long enough being nice, I reckon

  • Was looking for the same info and found this on the Royal Mail site, about their policy on forwarding mail. You can find it by searching for 'forwarding' on the Royal Mail site.

    "Forwarding a letter
    1. 1.1 Except in the circumstances set out in 1.2 below, we will not charge extra postage or fees for forwarding an item that has been re-posted in accordance with 1 above."

    Seems worth adding section 1.2:
1.2 We will charge extra postage and a may charge a handling fee for forwarding an item if it has been opened before being re-posted, or the name of the original addressee is covered or obscured, or it is forwarded by a business or a person acting on behalf of a business.

Which is precisely the situation where I forward mail to my sons, although the RM service is so dire these days that I often open it, scan and email them the attachment ...

If I do then have to forward the letter to them, I use a fresh envelope.

    Found the information here.
