John please read the card properly. Custardly worked as a PHG, the guy who fills in these cards. I worked a PHG, it's not the wrong card. By the sounds of things, you've seen the result of RM's cost cutting by having a very inexperienced person explain the card to you. They have been putting inexperienced ppl in the callers office for ages now, people who are untrained, and therefore are explaining things wrongly to customers, they seem to prefer putting people in these offices that are good at bs customers. Unfortunate but true.
The £1 charge is for underpaid items. That is clearly stated on the card. No one disputes that. What you need to get your head around is that yours is not an underpaid item, it's a customs charge. Therefore the £1 charge is inapplicable. The person who told you this is the wrong card is WRONG!
You are the first person I've ever had questioning this part of the card to be honest. Do it seems to be pretty clear to everyone else, maybe the misleading information you've been given has confused the matter further.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -

Thanks for explaining.
I'll go with what you say and not what one of your RM workers told me.
All I was moaning about is that it wasn't clear what the charges were
There was a X in the box indicating "Customs Charge" underneath it said "Payment Due " £13.54.
Now forgive me but £13.54 is not a Customs Charge, I've confirmed with Customs that the actual Customs Charge should have been around the £6 mark. This was before I collected the package and was told of the rip off £8 RM handling charge on top.
Ah well, all water under the bridge now.0 -

(Just placing a wink in my post so I can change the meaning of it if needed in the future)
Oh sorry, slipped up there, I'll forgive you this time:p0 -
There is a sticker on ure package with the exact breakdown of charges John. Those aren't listed on the card because of the lack of space and poor design. Plus the fact that they don't want people to notice that there's an £8 fee until they've paid for it
But ofc that's just my opinion and not RM opinion.
And I'm not disputing what a guy at RM told you, as I said, they stick people in these offices without any training whatsoever and let them loose on the public. And to be good at that job within the company, you've also to be good at giving a lot of flannel
I've only been with RM for a few years, but even guys who've been there 20+ years don't know the half of what goes on in callers offices. Then as soon as they pick up an injury where they can't do a normal duty, they are thrown in head first. It's just the way the company is going these days.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -

I have recently emigrated back to the UK from NZ and for the first time ever I have something really positive to say about NZ in comparison to the UK (and for the Kiwi's out there NZ is a lovely place!!!) as their postal service is overall a better system. The last time I ordered something from the States to the UK was 8 years ago, the parcel arrived, a week later I received a customs charge, I paid it. There was no handling fee. I am utterly flabbergasted as to what has changed to such an extent that I am now charged £8 (apparently previously £4)
At the end of the day it is what it is (and I would prefer not to have sarcastic remarks made about my post thank you!) but I went to a great deal of effort (thought I had anyway) to work out the costs for import duties and at no point did I read on the HMRC site or get results on their calculators that informed me there was an additional £8 (I am sure that someone will sit searching through the internet to show me the error of my ways but really there is no need now!)
I am setting up a small business and have limited budget this wasn't particularly helpful but a learning experience nonetheless!
well thats something to take up with HMRC
they allow the system to take place
if you are setting up a business and importing
think about it
its a flat rate of £8 order £100 worth of stock and its £8
order £10,000 and its £8
although being honest its moot as an order that value would be couriered but again if its parcelforce then its a max of £16
is this not the same?Customs charges — imported goods
Imported goods, such as those purchased on eBay and other international websites, may be subject to the payment of duty and/or GST.
Regardless of whether the imported goods incurred taxes in the country of purchase or not, it does not exempt the importer from the payment of New Zealand duty and/or GST.
In addition, an import transaction fee of $25.30 may apply. This fee is payable at the time that your goods are cleared. A biosecurity risk screening levy of $12.77 is also collected by Customs on behalf of MAF Biosecurity New Zealand.
The following list provides duty information on goods commonly imported by private individuals. The rates are a maximum rate — in some instances the duty rate may be less than that shown, as a specific concession or preference rate may apply.

as for comparing postal systems
its looks like NZ post has no competitors and is still state owned?
not quite a like for like comparison0 -
Hi I had to sign up just to contribute here.
I like many import many items from outside the EU to the UK. When I buy items costs just over the duty limit and incurring customs fees of a few pounds, It's extremely unreasonable to be charged £8 by royal mail for their international handling fee.
So I decided to complain to Royal mail and after getting nowhere apart from their standardised unhelpful responses and ending with me checking with independent mail regulators, I was directed to HRMC.
Afterall, it's them (HMRC) who decide to use Royal Mail in the first place once an item has reached the UK.
And I thought they should offer a choice, IMO, as to which mail carrier to use and not automatically put all parcels through RM and incurring the fee. I don't give up easily and I was pleased to get a workable solution.
There is a way around this, please read this and share, and stop being ripped off by the RM international handling fee:
'To avoid paying Royal Mail a handling fee you can declare the goods yourself. You will need to ensure that the sender clearly marks the parcel ‘goods to be customs cleared by importer’. You will then need to complete a legal import declaration which you will have to send to our Central Processing Hub in Salford. They will calculate any import charges and write and advice you of your tax liability. When you have paid this and the funds have been cleared, the Hub will clear the documentation and inform the Customs unit at the relevant Royal Mail Office that the goods may be released for delivery. This manual procedure will considerably delay receipt of your goods. You can obtain copies of the import declaration form from our National Advice Service (NAS) on 0845 010 9000.'
That is straight from a reply from HMRC after several emails.0 -
"This manual procedure will considerably delay receipt of your goods."
Sounds great, quick and no hassle at all. Personally, I'd rather pay the fee0
