Well done to thepearce. Hope this memo comes through to my store because at the moment they are still saying only 1 coupon in total off my bill if I haven't bought the item.

thepearce - could you ask the manager very nicely to send that email out to the rest of the stores or just Gainsborough/Lincoln and S'thorpe for us, as they are still mucking us about.

  • I can't use more than 10% even if I buy the products!! :( They spend around a minute studying each voucher then handing them back. Muppets.

Well that is so typical of someone who cant get his/her way, insult the staff that is so childish, I personally love people like you, I would really like to meet you as I would after you had called me a muppet(That is if you said it to my face, no doubt it would be muttered under your breath inmy experience) as I would make you look so small and embarress you as well. Please look at the cashiers side, they are doing what they are told so please have alittle patience and do not insult then with silly name calling. Oh and have a nice day. :T

He's said that he has asked for this information to go out to ALL tesco stores, and has personally emailed the stores in my area. I believe he spoke to someone at head office to get a full, clear understanding. He fully understood the confusion and frustration on both sides (Tesco & customer) and so asked HO that this policy be made clear....so hopefully they will do as requested. He's been very helpful, polite and has fulfilled all his promises so far so I've no doubt he took this action.

Hopefully this memo / email / communication will be taken notice of by those stores doing their own thing. All I can suggest for people still having trouble is to call the freephone number and explain you are having problems at xyz store which you wish to be sorted out...ie you believe they are misreading the policy - specifically the ..."we will accept one coupon..." part.

On my last call to HO they suggested that if I had problems at the store you should ask them to call the "trade & legal" dept. of Tesco HO.

Called in to Knocknagoney (Belfast) Tesco today on my way home. Had loads of coupons and as I had never shopped there before, I went to CS and asked about their policy on coupons. The lovely CS girls said she had never heard that they would accept any unless you bought the product. I explained that it is HO policy to accept coupons but often the Store Managers laid down their own rules. I also told her that my local store (Bangor) would accepot loads. She then called the CS Mgr over and asked her if she knew anything about this policy. The CS MGR looked at me as if I was something the cat brought in and informed that Tesco do not have any such policy as this would be illegal. I told that this was not correct and that Tesco do accept vouchers, at this point she stamped over to the telepone and proceeded to ring HO. A few minutes later she returned looking very smug and informed me again that HO had confirmed that Tesco had no such policy, what I wanted to do was illegal and it would not be acceptable in that store and if Bangor did it, they should not be doing it. She might as well have called me a thief there and then! Throughout the conversation I smiled and nodded and at the end of it said that in that case I would continue to shop in my local store as I knew they accepted them there. I thanked her and wandered off to see if there was on the off chance any BE Beef in Gravey (which there was). I just happened to be passing the Gammon joints and noticed that they were incorrectly priced so I picked 2, paid for them, checked my receipt and found I have been overcharged. I trotted off to CS desk where I received my refund. The CS Mgr happened to be doing something there and informed me that she had investigated further after I left and had found that in fact Tescos do accept vouchers!! However, she couldn;t just leave it there, she had to add that she still felt it was wrong and illegal!
Gez Tesco - just tell the staff what the flippin policy is and save all this agro!

Dear Kermit, this is typical of how ill-trained and ill-mannered cashiers deal with customers who are right.

That is funny that Knocknagoney should say that, Rose coz my cousin used to be a manager there for many years and it was she who informed me of the Tesco policy to accept coupons even if you did not buy the items. Also did you know that if you find something in the reduced cabinet that says "buy one get one free" you get the second reduced one free. Found this out when Ibougt some beefburgers reduced to 87p and got the second ones free. 8 burgers for 87p. It seems to me that Tescos are a law unto themselves and it is about time that the national media got hold of this story. I hope that igloo does take this further, as I think it is ridiculous that she should be treated like this.

However - it is NOT a police matter. Therre are no criminal offences with what she has descibed. It is entirely civil.
That's debatable ... and almost certainly wrong.

<sigh> I don't know how they manage to get a different answer when they call. If you email a simple query to Tesco they will come back with the standard reply. I'd tell everyone the name of the person who has been dealing with me at HO, but I don't think she's in customer service any more, so it's not fair (I've been in contact since March).

If you wanted this particular store sorting you could probably get HO to call them and straighten it out....so long as both sides understood the policy (wording).

Glad they conformed to the refund and replace though ;)
