hmmmn if the cereal bars aren't working for a few folk, I think I might rejig. Am thinking we can go down the route sian suggested a while back and do some sweet and some savoury scones...

will have to play and tweak a little with my spreadsheet....

is everyone ok for the first 2 days without any cereal bars ie only the carrot cake and what's on the menu? I don't want anyone hungry while we footle around with scones!!!

:j:j:j My lads love scones, they make their own when they are hungry!! We have Easter cake to finish too.

I let the men taste the nut butter I made today and they are quite impressed. BUT one of them saw we had no spread and went out and bought a huge tub of olive spread.

Other than that we are on track for tomorrow's start. :D

    Hey all!

    Soup...
To begin with I believe it would be more appropriate to call it onion and potato soup rather than potato and onion! I chopped the onion and bacon with about 1tsp of garlic puree and fried them up then cubed the potato (about 1cm cubed) and fried them for a few minutes, sprinkling over the stock cube. Then, after about 5 mins cooking I poured in 1.5 litres of hot water from the kettle, sprinkled in some salt and pepper and covered and cooked until the veg were soft. I left it to cool and whizzed up with a stick blender and it made what I would estimate to be 10 mug fulls of soup. It is thick enough that you could add another half a litre of water but I think any more would be too thin. I would advise upping the salt and pepper given the volume but it would be really nice with a chunk of bread and as it is a thick soup would be filling to have to stave off rumbly tummies! I wonder what flavour difference there would be without the bacon or whether you could have it as bacon bits to put on the top instead?

I made the half batch of the no knead bread and it seemed to behave very well. We have a fan oven but I still needed longer on the timings to make sure it was cooked right through. I used one normal loaf tin and 4 mini silicone ones, made the cutest little loaves of bread! I think with some soup it would make a lovely lunch!

Weezl, you mentioned Boodles biscuits, were they the shortbread-like ones I did the other day? They are nice but I think the flavour becomes less tasty over time if you see what I mean, I would make sure that the dough is more flavourful before baking it, the lard doesn't give the same taste as butter would so perhaps a little salt in there too.
Regarding scones, sorry to be annoying, was I going on about them? :( You can use the ready brek in them, use the lard as the fat and reduce the milk to half of the recipe, keep it frugal and all!

You are all doing brilliantly and I am sure I will be trying some more recipes out over the month (If I could be bothered to get the food processor out I would like to try the nut butter and the liver pate!) x

    good morning chaps :)

    Day 1

first things first, storage, freshness and use by dates.

I'm sure you'll have already done this but a reminder to do what allegra's batch cooking day tips list says and check the dates on the meat to make sure you will get a chance to cook it while it is still in date.

If the supermarkets have been a bit mean and given you some liver which expires very soon for example, pop it in the freezer raw and we'll be able to do this again once it's cooked. (meat can be frozen twice, once in it's raw state and once when cooked, any more is a health risk :))

I'm really hoping no one bought a month's worth of fresh milk, although I didn't say not to :o because I think that'll be tricky to store and keep in date :) Let me know if you have though and we'll come up with something clever and creative :)

The key things to remember: meat, freeze it raw if it's near it's date
veg, take it out of plastic, put in cotton or cardboard or thick paper and keep coolish and dark and dry.

I have updated the usual place to have a picture of your day 1 breakfast :)

sian, no! you didn't go on about scones, it's a great idea and I just remembered you'd made some clever suggestions about them :)

Arty, re the dried fruit thing.... you're a grown up and I know you can ignore me being a bit old mother henish, but doing the plan sans raisin, does leave you a fair bit short on your magic '5 a day' and your colours. I don't want you not to get all your nutrients :o

So I hope you can find some sort of alternative :) Anyhoo, I'll stop nagging now :D

Mr Frankie's Onion and potato soup :D

    800g onions
400g potatoes (washed not peeled) and cubed
    1 stock cube
    garlic, s and p
    chilli/garam if you fancy!
60g bacon cut into titchy pieces and fried with the onion :)

chop the onion and bacon with about 1tsp of garlic puree and fry them up then cube the potatoes (about 1cm cubed) and fry them for a few minutes, sprinkling over the stock cube. Then, after about 5 mins cooking pour in 1.8 litres of hot water from the kettle, sprinkled in some salt and pepper and cover and cook until the veg are soft.

Whizz up with a stick blender :)

Arty can you add this one? Ta xxx

ok I think I can change things so that instead of cereal bars, tom oaty biscuits and cheese balls we can have 3 different flavours of scone (no topping, but people said they were ok with this)

The main issue though is that assuming 20ml milk per cup of tea, we are now down to 3 cuppas rather than the 4 I promised :o this is assuming the stingiest milk we can get away with in a scone with no egg, no buttermilk, butter... :rotfl:

So what do people think, can the tea take a hit, or do we roll out the cereal bars?
