I had to take my daughter to the dietiian today, she has lost a stone since starting this diet, but previous to that her BP was slightly raised and they wanted her to lose some weight (in case that was the cause).
Her face when she asked what DD was eating and I said we'd changed to blue top milk and made her scrambled eggs with cream.
She started to talk directly to DD and told her that although she would lose weight she'd start to feel pretty bad, because she wasn't getting enough glucose for brain function, I pointed out that her brain would quite happliy use ketones for energy and DD was then told that in extreme cases this could cause coma via ketoacidosis. I knew she was talking BS but couldn't think of the science off the top of my head.
we're going back in 3 months and I'll be well prepared then.

I thought only type 1 diabetics could go into ketoacidosis.

Edit: Also the body can convert 50% of dietary protein to glucose if it needs to.

You'd think the dietician would congratulate your daughter for losing so much weight. I can understand if she is concerned about the nutrients or whatever but there is such a thing called encouragement!

Just had an embarrasing experience. Was sitting in the office (loo) reading my book when the doorbell went. Now, nothing makes me leave the office (especially when totm) so I just ignored it. The next thing I know there is a little face staring at me, cleaning the window. The window cleaner got a nice view of me knickers around my ankles and humming to myself! (In case you think a window cleaner isn't very MSE my mum paid and arranged for it as a "treat" for me.) I think neither of us got a treat!!

Mazzers -sorry you're having a rough time. I hope you gave your boss a nice swift kick up the backside. The other problem isn't so easy to solve. Maybe its the carbs talking but I think you will have to try sever the ties for your own good. Been there, done that, worn the tear stained t-shirt.

I'm off to the flicks tonight (free tix from MSE again) so I'm hoping to avoid the lure of popcorn by bringing a biiiiig bottle of water, a bag of almonds and a load of cheese.

Second opinions Why Low-Carb Diets Must Be High-Fat, Not High-Protein has a reasonable explanation.

Dr McCleary's Mother Natures Brain Fuel is another simple explanation. This was why I started using coconut oil, good source of MCT.

Thanks Ted, even in his blog he says half off the energy can come from ketones and the rest from sugars, are there enough sugars in a low carb diet for this? I'm also not sure what point he made about cannibalization, are muscles broken down for energy if the diet is low in protein? I think I 'm only supposed to have about 80g protein a day although I,m usually a bit over.

Absolutely and you're going to get some from the metabolism of that protein in your diet as well. Remember when we lived as hunter gatherer's we didn't have refined carbohydrates and although we may have had some whole grains and seeds these would not have contributed very much at all to the diet. Our bodies evolved to function best with only a relatively small percentage of our calories coming from carbs and if you are getting plenty of above ground veggies and salads as well as some fruit there will be absolutely no problem in fact as the research shows generally you will have better health outcomes.

  • Just wondered if anyone, particularly the veggies amongst us, have tried/heard of Spirulina??

I was flicking through a cookbook 'Vegetarian nosh 4 students' by Joy May & she says

'Spirulina is known as a 'superfood'. It is a microscopic algae and contains the highest concentration of nutrients found in any one food, plant, grain or herb. Weight for weight it contains twelve times as much digestible protein as beef. It is known to significantly increase energy and stamina levels as well as boost the immune system. It is an excellent food supplement for vegetarians.'

I don't know if it's something that non-veggies should be taking, I haven't googled it yet, but the bit about increasing energy & stamina levels made me think of you, mazzers ;)

As far as I know you can get it in tablet form or powder & can put it in smoothies, but that's as much as I know atm. Going to google to see what else I can find out.
