Going vegan......old style?!
Comments

I discovered whilst in superdrugs the other day that a lot of there products are vegan and they are not listed in the animal free shopper or on superdrug site, so some of you may not know about them.
Snap!! I went in the other day to look for hand cream and was surprised how much of their stuff is vegan. I don't know why I don't go in there more often - I just seem to forget it's there for some reason0 -
I bought some soya flour to use as an egg substitute and tried to make yorkshire puddings and they failed miserably! am I getting confused is soya flour the same as soy flour?
Although you can use soya flour as a substitute for eggs in some instances, you won't get the same results. You will not be able to make yorkshire puddings in the same way as you would with eggs. You could try googling vegan yorkshire pudding - I did find a substitute recipe ages ago which did the job, but weren't light and fluffy, but I can't remember which site it was on.0 -
Thanks for the replies about any noticable difference to your budget once you go vegan. I remember using Veganstore and Redwoods and becoming rather too excited at all the yummy things and buying far too much!!
We've had lots of family chats regarding having another go at a vegan diet, and we are pretty much decided that we will do so. I have the better part of a months worth of UHT milk and butter, half a dozen eggs and many veggie but non vegan items in the house. I cannot bring myself to clear out the cupboards and start from scratch, so we are just going to run the items down and then either replace, if possible, with a vegan alternative or simply do without.
Would like to hear more about tofu cheesecakes, please, justamum.....:D0 -
Oh. My. God.
Remember me? I'm Joy and I used to be on this forum.
Seriously guys, why does going back to work ruin my vegan fun! I promised myself I'd pop on here during lunch every day (or sneakily during 'wind down' at end of working day). Have I heck as like.
Man, I feel sad about that.
And so much to catch up on. Murrell, I seriously need to take you shopping when I go - am so pleased Superdrug does that many products; have always been a fan of Superdrug and now I've run down my questionable toiletries I know where to stock up. I think you are our adoptive mentor. If only AFS was that comprehensive. I think it's good if you strive to be a solid 'support vegan commerce' consumer (which I am determined to be) but if I've run out of something and need a cheap refill, now I know where to go.
Weight....hmm a tricky one for me. As you've heard me bleat on  about 'that' jaw op, eating hasn't be a wonderful pastime for me lately, and am trying to put on weight. What's tricky is that I know as soon as I start exercising again (running, yoga and jazzercise) the muscle tone will come back and so will my appetite, and hey presto, the weight goes back on. I'm 5ft 6 and at my lightest recently I've been 9st 7lb. I think you do have a natural weight and mine settles at about 10st 2lb - lots more and clothes get tighter, lots less and people comment - so as you can see I'm "underweight" for what I'm used to. Kate Moss seriously has nothing to worry about, but I've lost a bit of boobage and my bum's flatter than normal (no change on the tum as thanks to IBS it bloats up nice and easy). There's the issue of body size too - I could never physically be, say, a size 8 unless I removed a few bones here and there.
Comfort/fast food - forever the jacket spud and baked beans or pasta and sauce. I must admit to sticking a LM veggie pie in the oven and following up with my One and Only Love (don't tell OH), Swedish Glace. There's nothing better than cake though and there's been many a time I've eaten half a cake rather than a square meal. And I've now thrown aside my love for chocolate Swedish Glace........for vanilla SG. took it round a friend's last week for dinner, and hopped into Mr. T for random dessert. Am so glad I did.
BTW If any of you have had qs thrown at you when attending a party (i.e what buffet food do they cook) a friend of mine's partner went all out to accomodate me and Vegan Friend with the following at a lovely get together on Saturday: pasta, rice (with mushrooms, peas and asparagus), onion bhagis and vegetable samosas (Iceland I believe), and the very good 'chocolate' from Tesco (not Tesco brand but the stuff in the blue packet which I now can't think of). There were crudites but can't crunch on them yet
Old Mcdonald - my husband accused me of scrimping on his food to feed my veganism (i.e assuming my "special food" cost more). When I explained what I could get for his organic chicken (£5) and £5 mince - Alpro soya yoghurts, TVP, quinoa, Swedish Glace, etc. etc - he soon quietened down. So I don't necessarily think I save money on a weekly shop as such, but in the long term my staple goes further than hubbie's carnovore habits.
MENSTRUATION ALERT
Kim_ley and suep - have not yet ordered Mooncup so must get on that - have you got yours?
And thanks to those for the tips on free books/guides, am going to order some up xxxx

I usually leave home at 6.30am and quite often don't get in until after 9pm, so my meals have to be very carefully planned... and when they are, I lose weight, when they aren't I eat junk & get fat
...
.
Am never, ever going to complain about my 8 hour day and 40 minute drive each way. Can't remember the last time I was up at 6.30am, let alone leaving to go to work.
Greenbee, I hope the job is worth it xx0 -

Just went on Animal Aid, and they're at Lush in Chelmsford tomorrow, where I work. Spookily, I've a meeting in the town centre, five mins from where they're going to be! Hoping to make it down there to see what's happening, will let you know the outcome. :T0 -

That explains a lot, I too have the bloated feeling, my stomach is like a slow cooker :shocked:0 -
Yorkshire Puddings
3 oz (85g) white fat
4 oz (115g) self raising flour
pinch salt (fine)
½ pint (280 ml) soya milk
2 oz (55g) whole egg replacer
1. Preheat the oven to highest temp, 220°C/425°F/Gas Mark 7.
2. Put 1 tsp fat in each compartment on a bun tray with 12 compartments. Put the tray near the top of the oven with a baking tray underneath to catch drips.
3. Mix the flour and salt with a hand whisk very thoroughly. Mix the egg replacer into a smooth paste with about 2 fluid ounces/60 ml of water. Mix this in with the milk in a jug.
4. Once it is ready to go in the oven i.e when the oven and fat are very hot (this will take at least 10 mins) add half of the liquid to the dry mix. Mix it into a smooth batter (paste) then add the remaining liquid. It should be like cream, if it’s too thick add more liquid.
5. Transfer the batter to a jug and fill each compartment to the top. It should sizzle as it goes in. Do this as quickly as possible before the heat gets out. Cook for 15-20 mins.
