Preparing for Winter

  • I'm looking into wrapping up well indoors for this coming winter and wondered if there is a big difference between thermal underwear or just using layers of 'thin' clothing? Wouldn't a vest or t-shirt with leggings under clothes do the same job?

I've not read the whole thread as there's so much to catch up on, but wondered if anyone has mentioned or heard about the heated fleece throws?

That was the cheapest one I've found so far. I'm thinking it has to be a bargain if the heating is only kept on to a minimum.

MrsMacawber - my Mum's got one of those blankets - a dark blue and green tartan one. They're ok, but could do with a label at the neck as once you've opened it into a normal blanket its very hard to work out which way up it should be! :rotfl: Great for the sofa though!
  • Hi
Our local poundland in Croydon (20 miles away!!) is selling a pack of 2 kiddies hot water bottles, also adult ones for a pound each (As it would in a pound shop!) Just got 2 today.

Wow thats expensive.......I think you would be better buying a couple of fleece blankets (asda do one for under £2) .I personally wouldnt want to wrap something around myself that has electricity flowing threw it! I am know to be a little accident prone....... Dont like any sort of electric blankets really.
As for clothes ,lots of thin layers do work better than one thick layer because heat is trapped between the layers and natural fibres are best so that your skin can breath:D . I have been walking around in a t shirt today....but no one knows I have a thermal vest on underneath ;) lol:rotfl: :rotfl:
JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200:D FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. MARCH GC - out of £200

I take my hot water bottle for my feet in bed. Trouble is OH can't go near me then as he has diabetes and shouldn't put his feet on them! I get a great nights sleep though!

    Hi Skint_Catt
This is news to me and I was thinking of getting hot water bottles - I have only been diabetic for a year so still finding out about it - why is he/me not allowed to put feet on one?
    TIA

I would be very careful about using any electric blanket or gadget on my body, there has been some research into the damage caused by electromagnetic fields (real scientists, not just alternative stuff!).

The bedroom merits particular attention. Keep motor-powered devices like electric clocks, radios, fans, and space heaters at least four feet from your bed. (Because EMF intensity varies with product design, a small motor-driven clock can generate a stronger field than a high-powered transformer.) If your bed flanks a wall, make sure there's not an electric appliance on the other side. And ditch the electric blanket. Though redesigned models emit a much weaker magnetic field, a University of Utah study found that the new blankets induce higher currents in your body.

  • With electric running through our homes and work places I am not going to worry about my electric blanket. I'm more concerned with the heating bill! Just thought someone who hasn't heard of the heated throws would like to know they are out there. I love my electric blanket and wouldn't be without it and came across the heated throws when thinking of ways to keep warm without having to jump into bed, lol.

I've seen the Asda fleeces and they look thin and cheap. I'm sure I read that if you want to keep warm a good quality throw is best. I've got an old fashioned blanket on my bed and wonder do they still make them? I've seen throws and cellular blankets but not the old style type.

Hot water bottles are not supposed to be good for diabetics as the circulation in your feet becomes poor (I'm guessing serious diabetes - OH is only Type 2 diet controlled and his circulation is fine at the mo) and you can't feel it if it was burning/hurting your feet. He has to be very careful - he's not allowed to walk ANYWHERE without slippers or shoes on and has to take care of his feet loads so not to suffer problems if/when his diabetes gets worse. He's only been diagnosed a year but he's had two diabetic eye tests and lots of appointments with the diabetic nurse - have you had these? You should have been told about the feet thing then.

Thanks skint_catt - yes was told of the circulation problems and have had all the tests but no-one mentioned hot water bottles - glad I spotted your post! Thank you very very much for the info.:A
