.(Whoever was saying they cant get their compost going, try putting it in a sunny place if poss as the heat helps and turn it, turn it , turn it.)
That was me.... we have a south facing garden, with the bin in a corner at the bottom (6 foot brick wall behind it, and a 6 foot fence on one side -- but it still gets the sun a fair bit each day). Couldn't move it if I wanted to, as one corner by the house is where we access the garden, and the other is by the patio doors. Must admit I find turning it incredibly hard work -- in the main due to my bad back :(

I personally used to use it for about 30 to 45 days, depending on the how much and what was in my fridge on a regular basis.

    Hope that helps

Well we are very much of an age then - however I am jealous of Lizalu although she has my internal age externally! IFYKIM!

I guess I'm not really your average 21 year old! My OH is a lot older than me, and I love cooking for him and his children and my house-wife like life. Wouldn't change it for anything. We both work and used to get a takeaway / go out to eat about 3 times a week:eek: It seems ridiculous as I cook everything from scratch now, it tastes pretty darn good (even if i do say so myself!) and saves a lot of money :D Though not quite to Weezl's level! I did work out that in August we spent about £1.55 a person a day, which I am determined to get down.

  • Before the council gave us weelie bins they used to give us 2 bin bags a week. Since the weelie bins though we have had to provide our own. Mind you, I manage with carrier bags. keep one in the kitchen, and when full it gets tied up and thrown in the black weelie bin! We also have a green weelie bin for garden rubbish, a green crate for plastic bottles, glass jars and tins, a green bag for paper and a blue bag for cardboard! Phew!! Our rubbish gets collected every other week, eg one week black bin, one week recyclables. Took a bit of getting used to mind as we used to have a collection every week, and in the beginning everyone moaned, but you soon get used to sorting your rubbish.

CW - have been lurking for ages (months and months and months) but feel i have to share this tip. my compost was just smouldering away smelling quite bad, but then i read somewhere that you should add a spadeful of soil to the bin each time you put a load of stuff in. it works and i now have the most gorgeous compost!

  • Hi
Another lurker here. Back to the sausage topic. For some reason I remembered a recipe the other day that I had not used for years. Basically you skin some sausages and spread the meat in the bottom of an oven proof dish; top with sliced tomatos, apples and grated cheese then cover with mashed potato. Cook for 1 hour. I used Asda smart price sausages and left over mashed potato and swede. If anyone wants the full recipe let me know and I will post.

I buy packs of sausage meat and bake them without additions (son won't touch it with added onion). Normally served with chips, mixed veg and gravy. A firm favourite, and our Christmas dinner last year !!!!

  • Hi there everyone, I've finally caught up with you all after going through the last two threads over the last week - I'm exhausted!!!

I'm loving this topic, and I've convinced the fella that we can seriously cut back in October as a mini-trial (as he's quite a fussy eater!) and start saving for a holiday - which we didn't have this year as we just bought our house and are having fun trying to adjust to our mortgage!

Can't wait to try all the recipes, especially looking forward to some of the ones that involve foraging. I'm an ecologist and spend a lot of time out in the field, so hopefully will be able to collect big bags of allsorts!!!

Hope you don't mind me stopping lurking and actually joining in!
