Where to put my 50k?
Hi just got back from my Lloyds TSB branch depositing a cheque for 46k. Needless to say the teller wasn't going to allow me to make the deposit into my "classic" account and walk out the door. I had to talk to their advisor who tried to get me to open a new account. I told her I was planning to reseach the "whole of…

Hi everyone. I would like to have multiple savings accounts that I drip feed money into over the year, for things like car insurance, christmas, holidays etc. Things I know are an annual cost, and I can build up a little pot for each as I go through the year. Son's Tax Liability from Investments
I would appreciate some assistance on my sons tax situation. He will turn 18 in December of this year and owns a small business that generated him earnings of £8000 this year. His tax year runs January to December and on his earnings of £8000 this year he will pay only a few hundred pounds in Income Tax. However, he does…

Halifax Savings
I got a letter from Halifax the other day saying that cheque clearance times are 'simpler' and that credit interest on cash deposits will now be received on the following working day. I called Halifax who said this was to bring their accounts in to line with Lloyds. The current Halifax proposition for cheque clearing is…

HSBC Share ISA
Does any one have one of these. I've just opened one up, transferred my £5100 in and tried to buy some shares. The message says the share(s) can't be purchased inside the ISA. How do i know what shares i can buy within the isa wrapper. Further investigation reveals that the HMRC only permit certain types. The shares that i…

Long-Term Investments
My parents told me about a "With Profits Insurance Policy" of theirs that has recently matured and they advised me to start one up myself but these seem to be quite hard to come by. I am looking to save £100 a month over a long term, roughly 15 years or so. Unfortunately I am having trouble finding a plan that lets me…

Can't open another ISA: how do I prove who I am?
I'm trying to open an ISA with Principality BS. They will not take ID document copies signed off by the Post Office, unlike other banks. My bank (Barclay's) refuse point blank to sign off on the veracity of the copies (they "don't do that service ... we get asked every day"). I don't want to pay an IFA some stupid amount…

Difference between AER, Gross and Net interest
Can someone explain these to me please? For instance, in the best buy savings accounts, A&L pay AER 6.1%, but their NET is only 4.64% for a BR taxpayer, whereas Sainsbury's pay 6%AER but their net is higher at 4.8%. In terms of savings and return, it's NET I should be bothered with right? If so, which is the best savings…

Lending money
Is it possible to lend money legally and charge interest as a bank would? I.e. via a credit Union or something etc? Loads of people can't get loans these days because banks aren't lending. Also, interest rates are so low that it's pointless putting my money in a savings account at the moment. So is it possible to lend…

Impressed with Tesco Internet Saver
True, not the highest interest rate but for short term deposits and withdrawals they are FAST! Deposits added instantly via BACS and the same with withdrawals to your nominated bank account. Very good Tesco.

Why so many different interest rates
There are lots of savings accounts available all with different levels of interest rates. Why would bank A be 0.85% and bank B be 2.99%? Is it the banks with better rates are needing to get more fund through the door and the banks with lower rates are not in need of raising funds.
