Could you do it?

I have just been watching a report on the news about Ian Brady being transferred to hospital after suffering a seizure on Monday. If you were or are a nurse could you look after someone like him? Could you give him the care and treatment he needed or would you really struggle with it all?
I will be honest and say it would turn my stomach to show him any care or compassion whatsoever. Maybe that makes me an awful person I dont know, but as a mum and someone who loves children, I would not be able to walk into the same room as him let alone treat him. It has just made me think though that in some professions people must come up against extremely difficult personal dillemas.

The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

I have to say I agree with you. For the sake of society though I suspect it is a good job not everyone agrees.0

I wouldn't take care when Moving him or injecting him, but l would make sure he lived so he could go back to jail alive to continue his miserable existence for as long as possible.

There are all sorts of people where I work that are not very nice.
I treat them all the same, as in the care I provide for them. I certainly would not be interested in developing a rapport or relationship with him that I can with some of the patients I look after.£608.98

I hope I could. Not because I spare him any compassion, but simply because it's the humane thing to do. It's an important tenet of a civilised society that everyone gets the medical care they need, regardless of merit. It makes us all better people at the end of the day. His crimes are for his conscience. We should still do the right thing."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Any nurse/doctor who refuses to help another human being because of what he has done is not fit for the profession.
I agree with Fluffnutter whole heartedly.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

To me he is the perfect example of why we don't need the death penalty.
He has been trying to die for decades. But we won't let him!
If I was his nurse it would be in the forefront of my mind. Keep the b ugger alive. But if ever I stray from the path I follow

This.
There are always patients you warm to or like more than others, ones you miss when they leave and ones you breathe a sigh of relief, but its part of the job to treat everybody with the same basic level of respect and care.0 -
If I were a nurse I wouldn't like to be near him. However I would treat him and do my best to make sure he lived if at all possible. He wants to die. He has been trying to since the nineties when the hunger strikes began and he was tube fed. Who knows if he has a conscience and cant live with his crimes. More likely he hates the hideous, pointless life he leads and wants out of it.
On Monday he is due to attend a mental health tribunal regarding his application to be transferred to a Scottish prison and allowed to die. Personally I want him to attend that and for someone with some common sense to turn round and say no to him. His victims families are serving a life sentence so why shouldn't he.If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants ~ Isaac Newton0 -
From a slightly different perspective . . Is the response because you 'know' what he's done ?
. .
I worked as a manager with a guy who had suffered with severe depression, to cut a long story short after supporting him in the workplace for several years he spoke to me saying that the reason for his depression was because he had abused children earlier in his life . .
did this change my attitude towards him . . Yes, but until I knew what he had done I found him erudite and an interesting man to deal with . .
My point, lots of people deal with others on a one to one basis with out knowing their background
But I agree with the sentiment of others that you are employed to do a job and then you walk away.0 -

To be honest yes my initial feelings were based on knowing what he had done. I can see that everyone is entitled to medical treatment as and when they need it. Also that by recieving this it does mean that he might not get his wish to bail out of a life he detests. I greatly admire people in the medical profession who are placed with caring for him right now. Cant be an easy call for anyone. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame.
