Happy hacking
Anybody who has got a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. Congratulation! The opensource version of Android Pie (Android 9) has been developing already.
Last a couple of years, smartphone (mid-range) hardware became very powerful. Simply software (OS) development is so behind. You really don't have to keep dumping your phone for every 1-2 years, as long as you can get the updated operation system.Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is the excellent example.
Again. This is not the everybody's solutions. But still this is the cost-saving environmentally friendly solution.

Considering my battery is possibly going (and I'm stuck on 6.0.1) that's very interesting news, the phone is within my normal budget for a phone anyway and it's got a 5.5inch screen. Perfection.
Edit: This would be my very first Android phone where I'll have the latest OS as well. Just got to convince the wife now0 -
Moto G6 for pretty close to that price. Cracking phone.0

We have had two Moto phones and both have had a similar problem, they have a mind of their own and start dialling randomly numbers in my phone book and regular freeze.
I would not touch another ever again0 -
I would go with any of the following - obviously look at reviews yourself and see what you think, but these should be available for the price you've specified and are all quite recent and reasonable spec:
Moto G6 Play
Huawei P Smart
Huawei Y7 2018
Honor 9 Lite0 -

G6 play at that price. G6 is around £200. I've just bought one but haven't used it yet.
We've had more Moto Gs than I can remember and have had no problems with any of them. Two children have Moto g5s which reviews much better than the 5g, but again would be out of budget for the OP and they both think they are great.0 -
