Here is the MSE advice article which covers the process in some detail:

If you have specific questions after reading the above, by all means return here and ask.

The simplest way is to write to every lender you used and provide them with your details (current + any old addresses, old name if married/divorced etc) and ask them if they still have any details on your account and if it had PPI

If they do and you had PPI and you feel it was miss-sold then write back to them with the reasons why you feel it was miss-sold, plus any evidence you have to support your complaint and see what they say.

You can google the addresses for all the above or search this forum to see who to complain to if the company was purchased.

Don't use a claims firm - be careful you don't end up on their site by mistake, some of them are designed to make it look like you are complaining to the firm rather than via a claims company

If you repaid the balance in full each month then PPI is not charged. It is only when you borrow on the card outside the interest free period that PPI could apply. So, that may help filter some options out.

Then you make a compaint with either you didn't want it or need it because you had good sick pay, cover elsewhere or it wouldn't have paid out because you were ineligible.
Whatever suited your circumstances ta the time it was sold.
Shampoo? No thanks, I'll have real poo...

Morning all thanks for your replies up to press.
Capital one checker had said i had ppi back in 2004.
    And fill in the form.
It asks for employment status i cannot remember back then but think i was not.
Do they require this info or proof as it says ask hmrc for proof.
Also i did not know or remember having this ppi as this is why i checked.
    Any help guys
    Thankd
