I'm currently with 3 on a monthly rolling contract.

I pay £10 a month and get:
100 minutes
zillion of texts
1 GB internet.

I found those 100 minute not enough and the 1 GB ran out quickly and I don't care about sms.. I barely send 20 texts a month so I shopped around and found giffgaff is the best for me.

For £10 a month they give me:
250 minutes
Unlimited Texts
Unlimited Internet

I phoned 3 and asked to leave them.
The agent told me that there is nothing called unlimited internet.
He said the maximum internet given in the UK is 1GB and that is what unlimited internet means.

I checked giffgaff website and they said "unlimited internet" and they had the following:
Mobile Internet (up to 20MB) 20p per day

They also said:
Mobile Internet:
Mobile Internet is charged at 20p a day (up to 20MB).
You will be charged at 20p/MB until you use 1MB/day. If you use between 1MB and 20MB you will only be charged 20p/day. If you go over 20MB you'll be charged extra at 20p/MB.

Do you understand from that they don't offer unlimited internet?
How is their customer service and coverage? I know they use O2 towers.

    Don't listen to 3 'advisors', they blatantly lie. Unlimited means unlimited, 3 even offer an unlimited tarriff!!

    • The above are their PAYG prices, whereas the £10 goodybag includes unlimited internet.

    • Coverage is the same as O2

    • Customer service is web based, there is no phone support.

    Unlimited most certainly does NOT mean 'unlimited'. There will be a 'fair use policy' which will provide a restriction should the user exceed what is deemed 'reasonable' use. The Advertising Standard Authority is to blame, as they feel nothing contradictory in the use of the word.

    Currently unlimited IS unlimited with giff gaff although they are aware that a small number of users account for a large proportion of the bandwidth so they may introduce some kind of fair use policy in the future. If you buy a Goodybag, the 20p per day doesn't count as all data is included in the Goodybag. You can't use a standard Goodybag for something like an iPad or tethering to another computer though - you need a Gigabag for that.

  • As long as you don't stream tv 24/7 or download huge HD movies or large files that are obviously not "mobile use" then Giffgaff is unlimited. Many users report that they've munched through 10+GB of data and nothing is said. Probably best to try an o2 sim in your phone to test the network coverage. And the help is online based there isn't a phone number you can ring if there's any problems although the forum community is very helpful & you will get a reply to ANY question within 2 minutes.

    Most problems with giifgaff (I use them) seem to be related to porting numbers and buying goodybags at the last minute when the system is playing up.

    Everything else is automated via the website. If you decide to switch it might be an idea to make a clean break and get a new sim with a new number and let all your contacts know (easy enough with unlimited texts!) as its porting into giffgaff that seems to give the most issues. Porting out doesn't seem to hard, there is a link on the giffgaff site to get your pac code so then its up to your new network to get it switched if you decided to leave.

    Other than that, you can stack up your next goody bag ready to take over automatically - and you can purchase it as soon as one runs out so do it early on and I have never had any issue with continuity of service. Do this, and stick £20 of ordinary credit on as well to cover anything not included (premium calls etc) and your sorted.

    I use a lot of data, but I don't bother monitoring it as its unlimited certainly in the context of a smart phone usage. The beauty of this is if you get a misbehaving app that hammers the data you won't end up with a surprise £800 data bill one day.

    People try to make out its different to O2 on which network it runs, my work phone is on O2 business, I get the same signal levels, in the same places the same data rates, same call standards etc. The only difference is the cost!

    With Giffgaff the unlimited Internet is not unlimited

    11.3.6. if you do anything or permit anyone else to do anything which we reasonably think adversely impacts the Service to other giffgaff customers or may adversely affect the Network.

    11.3.6 covers that. If too much use of Internet adversely impacts the service, Giffgaff.

    By the way the Internet via tesco mobile and Giffgaff, both use o2 network is slower than direct from O2.

    It's as good as unlimited though. I know of people who have used 20gb in a month and never had a problem. Whilst there may be a fair use policy which would be more than 20gb, it's essentially unlimited as you'll never have a need to use that much.
