My pc has virtually died on me

Not sure where to post this but here goes ...

My pc has virtually died on me.

As soon as I switch on Windows XP COMES UP AND THEN IT CLICKS OFF, THEN IT GOES BLANK AS IF A POWER CUT HAS TAKEN PLACE, THEN THE NEXT SCREEN HAS WRITING ON IT, TELLING ME TO START WINDOWS NORMALLY... THE BEGINNING OF THAT MESSAGE TELLS YOU THAT THERE HAS BEEN AN INTERUPTION OR POWER CUT, WHEN YOU DO PRESS A KEY THE SCREEN GOES COMPLETELY BLANK AND THEN BACK TO WINDOWS XP AAGAIN, AND THEN CONTINUES LIKE THAT ... HAVE TRYED POWERING DOWN AND POWERING UP ... SAME THING. HELP PLEASE !!!

    boot into safe mode

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument

and see if the option "Last Known Good Configuration"

Restores the registry and driver configuration in use the last time the computer started successfully.

if not try "Safe Mode" on it;s own and see if that works

The computer is Scaleo P 800. The CPU has scaleo p on it and the manual describes it as Scaleo 800

Go into safe mode like Browntoa(d) says. Click on the start menu and select:
Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore

Make sure the dot is in the "Restore my computer to an earlier time" button and click Next.

Select the most recent time and press Next. I think you then have to press OK.

Your computer will reload all the settings from before it knackered itself and then restart. Hopefully it will be back to normal.

If not, go back into safe mode and do the System Restore thing, but this time select a time before the most recent.

Hi, thank you for your advice here ... the PC doesn't allow you to go to 'start menu' ... could the machine be infected?

Hi, no not yet. I am loathed to take it PC World ... they want £50 just to look at it.

Start menu is the button at the bottom left of your screen.

    You cannot see this?

No I can't see that i'm afraid. I know it seems crazy but it's true.

So there is no taskbar at all? If you put your mouse to the bottom of the screen, does it not pop up?

On your keyboard, what happens if you push the windows start key? (The one with the windows logo on)
