Cheap Malt Loaf/Kids Activity Recipe

A 2-in-1 money saving recipe - keep the children busy and then eat it too!!

In a bowl put:

1 cup all bran (cheapo brand or stale is fine)
1 cup milk
1 cup dried fruit
1/2 cup sugar

and leave overnight or till the bran is completely soft.

Add 1 cup s/r flour and a splash of milk and mix it up (it WILL look vile). Put into a loaf tin (or try making 1.5 x the quantity above to fit a round cake tin - can't promise it'll turn out right though!!)

Cook at 180 for approx 45 minutes.

This has worked every time for me and I prefer it to the cheap brand shop bought malt loaf. Keeps the children happy too as they can do most of it themselves.

  • I have almost identical recipe but bran and fruit are soaked in tea overnight, use any left in the pot, or make some fresh, but remember to take out the tea bag! ;)

    re weetabix too,

i gave up trying to get my kids to eat it, so when i done bacon and egg, i crush one in the fat left over, make a ball and put it out for the birds, they love it, and the kids like watching them eat it.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Have just found a weetabix cake recipe if anyone can use it!

    5oz Brown Sugar
    5oz Sultanas
    1/4 pint skimmed milk
    2 weetabix
    5oz self raising flour
    1 beaten egg

Pre heat oven to 180c/350F/gas 4

Mix the sugar, sultanas, skimmed milk and weetabix together in a large basin. Set aside and leave to stand for 2-3 hours.

Add the self raising flour and beaten egg and mix well together. Spoon the mixture into a greased 2lb loaf tin. bake for 1 hour or until risen and cooked.

Remove from oven and cool in the tin then turn onto a wire rack.

    Recipe says it serves 10
