Nobody has any money. It's going to be hard selling a lot of high value items at the mo.

Rubbish. There is plenty of money out there but always reluctance to spend it, which is a different issue! I sold my Citroen C4 for £8,000 recently, which is £1,000 more than I would have got from webuyanycar.com.

Everyone always thinks that they are being ripped of by a garage that buys your motor and then resells it for more money. Not True!

If you sell it privately, the buyer has vanishingly small protection.

Utter nonsense. If the car is still in warranty, with full service history, the buyer has that benefit given to him with the car. If not, as long as the price is competitive, the buyer can always have the car checked out by the RAC, AA or a local garage before committing himself if he is that nervous. The whole point of buying privately is to get the best possible deal, so yes, there will always be an element of risk, but then you should always examine the car beforehand and test drive it at least. When you buy from a dealer he will always add any extras to the price, so you will always pay more!

Understand this: cars are not easy to sell - they are expensive items and many people won't even consider buying one unless from a dealer. Buying from a private seller entails more risk and many people are very risk averse, even when offered a very good deal.

My advice is to advertise on Auto Trader and also on eBay. Don't expect a quick sale though - I have sold two cars this way and it took 4-5 weeks each time round. Don't panic, be patient and it will sell.

Do you realise you are responding to a question from 15-09-2008? I am pretty sure that the op has either-
    sold the car
    or
    died.

To be fair the OP did post on 26-08-11 so may still be alive, but I doubt the car is :)
