Best place to sell a car?

I'm trying to sell my 56 Reg Ford Fiesta as we no longer need a second car. I've had it advertised in Autotrader for the last 3 weeks and have only had one phonecall which was a scam. I've also got a For Sale sign in the window of the car but had no interest at all. What am I doing wrong? Is there somewhere else that I could try selling it as well?

I've got it up for £4995 and the book price according to Glass guide is £5500 so I thought that someone would snap it up. I really need to sell. Help!

how much are they selling for on autotrader? is it possible to have a look at close or direct comparisons with yours in your area?

is it the parkers or which? guide? I thought glass' guide is for the trade?
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

Try gumtree-I recently sold my car on there. You can have as many words as you want and three pictures and best of all it is completely free so you've nothing to lose.

If you do decide to do it make sure you put it on every city remotely near you-when I sold mine I only added it onto Sheffield on a whim as it is fairly far away but in the end that was where I sold it to! Also make sure you resubmit your advert every couple of days so it stays near the top.

As others mentioned though you need to make sure the price is right!
  • I've done quite a lot of research on how much my car is worth. Parkers says that its worth about £5300 and looking on Autotrader the price I'm asking is very competative.

I had someone come and look at the car yesterday and they really liked it. They said that they would be back last night with someone who knows about cars to give it the once over. You guessed it they didn't come back

I really really need to sell this car. Are there any websites that buy cars off you?

Nobody has any money. It's going to be hard selling a lot of high value items at the mo.

Welcome to the wonderful world of selling cars.

You need to drop the price. Put an online-only advert in Autotrader for 6 weeks (£39.99, I think) and drop the price a little each week until somebody bites. Use the 'telesafe' option to scramble your number and you usually get less scam callers. Try looking at the wording of your ad....the bigger the ad the better in my view. If you book it online you can write half a book.
  • As other posts have mentioned advertise in autotrader...others are gumtree, ebay (not sure what the fees are so you will have to do your research on this one), your local supermarket, and your workplace.

Put special features in the ad like air con, electric windows, central locking, new tyres, just serviced. This will make the buyer more keen to purchase your car!

Firstly your Autotrader ad needs more pictures.

Mainly though, searching Autotrader for a 56 reg Fiesta 1.25 Style, there are cheaper ones than yours, even though their mileage is higher. I'd rather save £500 if I were buying, even if it meant an extra 10,000 miles on the clock.

For realistic prices check eBay completed listings rather than Parkers etc. Judging by this auction, people are prepared to pay about £4,000.

I agree. I sold a car via Gumtree earlier this year and had quite a few enquiries ...including one couple who actually turned up and bought it !

I like the idea suggested here of also advertising it in other adjacent areas.

My son has just bought his latest car from a seller 40 miles away and this was found on the free website

Simply your price is too high, I can see other sellers also advertise at around your price but they will have no interest. Some 06 cars are selling for low £4k, if I had the cash to buy your car i would be looking to pay you low £4k, around £4200.

Basically you would need to lower the price to around £4500 to see if there is any more interest and then be prepare to lower further if you need to get rid of quick. As others says, times are tough on money these days. My last car a bmw 323ci coupe cost me £5.5k last year and a year on its worth £4k. Your car are targeted more due to it small size engine, but the price need to be appropriate.
  • Well I ended up selling it to a garage for £4800 in the end. They now have it up for £6000 on the forecourt. Sods law I've had 6 phonecalls since all interested in the car.

    Thanks for the advice.
