It's not just the monitor you need to emulate, it's the keyboard and mouse, and maybe audio too.
vnc/remote desktop etc, is "a window on a pc", which could be the other side of the world, with no monitor attached at all - you'd just be viewing what would be on the monitor if you were sat there, in a window on the controlling pc, but you are really complicating things, if you need them both on at the same time, without any sluggishness in control, buy a switch and cables - if you can find one that supports your monitor inputs/outputs for a reasonable price
If you aren't bothered about responsiveness, install a vnc server on one, and a client on the other - but you need to make sure your server pc can boot without any keyboard/mouse attached.
the other possibility is, ditch the older pc completely, and run it under a virtual machine on the newer one.!!

it depends on your operating system, but vnc can be setup to accept requests automatically, with password if required.!!

If you don't need sound, just try vnc, install server on xp, install a client on W7

This is the issue closed. I cannot install anything on the XP machine as I have no monitor to connect to it. If I had, I wouldn't have started this thread asking for monitor access via an unorthodox method.....0

I know what it is, but as I remember it the 2nd PC needs to accept the RD request from the main PC manually, does it not?
No. With Remote Desktop, you simply need to tick a box once (it's somewhere in the Control Panel) to tell the computer to accept Remote Desktop requests, and away you go. I think you're getting VNC/Remote Desktop confused with Remote Assistance.Je suis Charlie.0 -
