Whats the cheapest internet dial-up company to be with in the UK? I've just been given a PC and would love internet access but unfortunately am on incapacity benefits and don't have much money to play with. Does anyone out there know which is thwe cheapest company, either the cheapest PAYGO rate per minute or a really cheap package per month? I would love at some point to get broadband but as far as I know it is quite expensive!
I hope someone out there can help me!
Thankyou

If you are on a tight budget, a good one to go for would probably be https://www.mipcards.com, which operates on a prepay basis. I have used them in the past several times.
Pay £10 for 2,000 minutes of internet access (that's 0.5p/minute). You have three months to use your minutes. There is a 30 minute free trial to try out first to make sure you're happy with their service. If you do not have a credit/debit card, you can pay by cheque/postal order (but there is a 99p additional charge).
You could also try https://www.18185.co.uk and https://www.geoisp.co.uk but there are mixed reports of reliability - possibly "too cheap"? I don't know as I have not used them.
If you're happier to go with a monthly fee service, dmcdial.net have been exceptionally reliable for my parents, who have used them for a few years now. It's £5.99/month for 40 hours of internet access. That's 0.25p/minute if you use them all - but you still pay £5.99/month if you don't use all the minutes. If you use up all 40 hours the connection stops working until you get to the beginning of your next month. You can always use the backup 0845 number if you run out of minutes. https://www.dmcdial.net0 -
Just to add to the previous post.
DO NOT USE BISCIT!!!!
Why?-Check out the other forums the answer.
If you require paygo then you will probably end up with a 0845 number the trick here is to sign up towww.18185.co.uk,its free with no ties.
You then put 18185 in front of your 0845 connection ,this then costs 4p connection+0.5p/min off-peak compared to BT at 1p/min, so after 10mins(not long once you get on here) you start saving.
You still save during peak times but I can't remember by how much.
I'm not sure if this works with 0844 numbers.
18185 can be used to call mobiles -4p connection plus either 2p/min(weekends)or 6p/min weekdays.
This is all without bothering BT or any other fuss and mine was active in less than 24hrs.
Hope this is of some help.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
According to 18185's terms, you can't access the Internet using their services:
"Can I access the internet via 18185?
No, unfortunately this is not possible. Internet providers offer dial up services using special access numbers which cannot be dialled using 18185."0 -
Hi esuhl
It may say that in the T&C's, but when the fast4/v21/biscit fiasco was at its height and I had no fast4 connection, I used another dialup provider and just put 18185 in front of their 0845 number ,this worked fine on several occasions .
This is shown on my last bill in amongst all my calls to mobiles.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Cheers, Spud17, that's good to know. I've got to set up a newbie's PC with dialup in a few weeks, so 18185 will come in handy for her!0

Got a new computer in November and a new BT line (hadn't had either in a while), intention was to start a broadband contract with someone. Couldn't decide who so I took up BT's offer of 1 months dial-up for 1p while I decided. In December I still hadn't decided and anyway I thought it might be wise to wait and see the new broadband offers in the New Year. So I cancelled the BT dial-up and loaded AOL's dial-up disc (found it in PC World) which offers 1 month free unlimited dial-up. Today when I phoned to cancel it (getting close to end of free month!) the nice lady I spoke to in India immediately, without me asking (I wasn't even going to!), gave me another free months dial-up.
So this means so far I've had 3 months unlimited dial-up for 1p (the BT package does have a usage limit of 150 hours or something so basically unlimited). By the sounds of them, AOL would probably extend my free period again if I asked them. I may never get round to signing up for a broadband package at this rate!
Hope this helps and good luck.0 -
After waiting patiently for free broadband with Talk Talk since last June, they finally told me yesterday that I am not in a broadband area.
I am currently on unlimited dial-up with Tiscali for £14.99 a month. Its hard to say how much I use, but probably up to 50 hrs a month.
What is the best way to check for the cheapest provider, and is it easy to switch?
