Quick Questions on reheating

    Hi all!
    Im after some quick advice :D
    I am an avid lurker but rarely post, mainly cause I don't want to sound stupid.
    I have just made a huuuuge shepherds pie.
    I am cooking it now and will give my one year old some in half an hour - then about half 9 when my partner comes in will reheat and eat some then and then will freeze the rest.
    Might sound silly but how/how long shall I heat it up from Chilled and from Frozen?

    There's no such thing as a silly question:D

    I would heat through the Shepherds Pie either in the MW from chilled or through in the oven, but make sure its hot all the way through. I dont usually heat through from frozen, but when I have done, I have put in oven on low heat then once hot wack the heat high. I mainly defrost it, then oven heat it through.

    Hi Carla,

    Not silly at all!

    I think it depends largely on how you plan to reheat it? In the micro from fresh I'd give it 4 minutes and then test it. I tend to reheat mine from frozen in the oven for 35 mins - but always test it first.

    My mum used to test by sticking her finger in, and if it burned it was ready! I think this is a little foolhardy. So I test by putting a metal knife into the centre for a moment or tweo, pulling it out and putting it on my lip. If it's uncomfortably hot - it's done.

    Depends how large 'really huge' is! From frozen I'd say around 45 minutes at 160C, then test, if it's about 500-800grm. If it's chilled just heat it in the microwave and then finish in the oven/grill for a crispy top - say 5 minutes in m'wave (or longer on lower power I'd prefer) and 20 minutes in the oven

    Nice to see you posting ! Hope you stick around. I ask "silly" questions ALL THE TIME, so you are in great company:p

    I'll merge this with quick questions on reheating later

    If you are freezing the remains - do bear in mind you will be heating it again if that makes sense , so what I would do, is only reheat hubbys portion size - rather than reheat the whole thing as that means it has been cooked again? Not sure I am explaning well :p I would just try to avoid heating things too many times. Do let me know if this makes sense:D:o

    Alternatively, you could take the pie out in the morning you plan to eat it and leave it on the side to defrost, come the evening it should just need the heating up.

    I bought some breaded scampi that was in the reduced section, The cooking /storage instrctions wew covered so i just stuck it in the freezer.

    I took it out and says "this may have been frozen prevouisly and thawed in controlled conditions, it is not suitable for home freezing".

    I have some prawns I did the same with and it says "this may have been frozen prevouisly and thawed in controlled conditions, it is still suitable for home freezing".

    why the difference? can can I really eat the scampi? I don't want to waste it. I have often eaten quorn / vege stuff that says this with no ill efffects.

    what would you do?

    I'd eat it.

    I just tend to make sure that it's cooked for slightly longer than usual. :D

    thats what I thought, its chilled should be cooked for 10 mins, they've been in 25!
