Hi anyone who can advise!!!
4 of us (2adults and 2 children) are going to Egypt in 3 weeks and although I am REALLY looking forward to it, the amount of people that keep telling us we will end up with a dodgy stomach is starting to worry me!
Does anyone have any experience of this, or any general advice about what precautions to take etc...
We are staying in Sharm El Sheikh , Naama Bay area.
Thanks

I had a friend who had to come back from Luxor last week wearing a large nappy on the plane. His health is recovering quicker than his pride!0

Years ago our son had a tummy problem in Luxor and the local doc said the standard Imodium prescription in the UK was inadequate in the high temperature there. So he prescribed something local which cleared it up nicely.
As for prevention, there's a useful page on Trip Adviser.0 -
im always hearing stories of dodgy stomachs people goin to egypt, ive booked a holiday for febuary to go sharm, always make sure you take some tums and diolate some, which replaces the lost salts. and ive been told take hand wipes and bacteria gel, use this everytime you use the money as its so dirtyi will be debt free, i will0

Have spent 3 weeks in Sharm and had the squits for one afternoon. Imodium did the trick no problem.
Just be sensible like you would anywhere. Drink bottled water, don't have ice etc.
I absolutely love it there. :T
Where you staying?0 -
Went to Sharm in February - had no problems. Here are a few tips
1. Treat it a bit like spain etc - no ice, avoid washed salads, drink bottled water etc.
2. The money is filthy. After handling use some of that gel dry hand wash - we also used this before eating if we were away from the hotel, or anythime we had handled anything that was a bit suspect!
3. Two weeks before we went, we got some Acidophilus(sp?) from Holland & Barret - this builds up 'friendly' bacteria in the gut and helps fight anything you may eat that's a bit dodgy. We took one a day 2 weeks before we went and took 1 a day while we were there.
4. Finally, if you do get an upset tum, don't bother with anything you've brought from home to treat it, go to the local pharmacy and they will have stronger tablets that do the trick - I believe very quickly.
This may all sound terrible, but it's really just basic hygene and being a bit careful of what you eat. We had a great time - and will be going again next year.0 -
And eat fresh pineapple now until you go. Helps protect the stomach.0

i go to egypt and have had upset tums but i have just come back from malta and had it there too.. i never avoid the salad as the quality of salad is one of the great joys
a lot of the problem is that people go out drink more alcohol at night then usual, then sit in the sun all day and dont drink enough water to rehydrate
make sure u drink LOADS of water, dont overdo the booze or sun
i second the comment about the money its filthy use a cleaning gel, also agree about taking acidopholus before u go and while u are there
when we go we buy a product called antinal its in a yellow and blue packet, first sign of any queasy tum take it every 4 hrs and within a day u will feel fine... we buy it in egypt approx 50p a box, its so good we buy extra and bring it home with us lol
have a great tiimeWhen you know better you do better0 -
Re- Bottled water, bottles could have been filled from a tap !, get fizzy water, more likely to be genuine.0

If you're going all inclusive and the food is buffet-style, keep an eye out for food that's making a reappearance, e.g. if you had sliced beef one day and there's meat in a sauce the following day, it might be the same meat.
On a Nile cruise, there was always pomegranate seeds and black olives but nobody seemed to be eating them. We suspected that they were spending 2 hours out at lunch, then another 3 hours at dinner - not the best way to keep foodstuffs.
Great suggestion about the anti-bacterial hand cleanser.0
