So, thinking a bit laterally here...

Couldn't a person setup a company which has several powerful computers receiving LIVE broadcasts, buffering them for say 5 seconds, and then sending them on their way to a users web-browser?

Like iPlayer, but for all TV (freeview) channels!

The company buys 1 TV licence, none of the users need a TV licence!

Back from cloud-cuckoo-land though (LOL!), the costs would probably be prohibitive - bandwidth, servers, etc. - so a subscription fee to cover these would negate the benefit from having to pay for a TV licence!!

    Ah well....

EDIT: Re: OP / not buying licence...
No doubt there's probably time-shifting software available for the PC - it won't be long before someone writes one which can record iPlayer live for watching at a later point - if the heavies come round, just deny all knowledge!!

Good luck not getting sued to oblivion by the companies that hold the rights to the programs and license them out for broadcasting ;)
  • One thing to bear in mind is that as you have held a license and then decided not to renew, you will probably get a letter asking why. What, if anything, you choose to answer is up to you, but I'd be wary about telling a load of porkies like "We no longer have a TV" in case it rebounds on you. And of course if you tell the truth and it turns out the advice given here is wrong or out-of-date, they'll be after you to renew.

Good grief! If I got a letter like that, I certainly wouldn't deign to give a reply! Absolutely none of their business whatsoever!

Personally I wouldn't have a problem. I don't see the point in wasting people's time when it could all be solved quite quickly.

I see what you mean, but why should they waste my time by requiring me to write a letter, when I haven't committed an offence and have no obligation to reply? Jeez. I'm becoming a grumpy old git in my old age!!!

The BBC shows some programmes live on the internet doesn't it?

You'd need to be pretty sure that what you were watching wasn't being broadcast at the same time.
