and increases your chances of going to visit him in a hospice and witness the pain of cancer killing him as the pain relieving medication fails to work and the cancer bites into his organs slowly and very painfully killing him.

    Hi Richard,

I agree with your view on smoking.
However I know my FIL will smoke WHATEVER.
He has had one heart attack and that didn't stop him.

If I don't bring cheap cigarettes back then all I do is punish him and my MIL financially because I know he WILL NOT stop but pay £50 a carton in the UK.

If the birth of a child or a life threatening heart attack does not stop someone then your "emotional blackmail" will not work.
Believe me - I've tried it all.

I won't feel guilty if I have to watch him gasping for his last breath as I reckon I'm doing the right thing.

    You're wrong mate:

Maderia is in the EU so therefore the cigs are not duty free they are duty paid

They do not have to be for personal use they can be given as gifts you just cant get any money back for them or use them as a payment in kind.

    all the best

Thank you Mr Bear. I felt sure that you would provide input into this thread with your personal knowledge of this topic.

If I buy enough duty paid cigarettes from Spain it usually goes some way to offsetting the cost of the trip for a long weekend or week's holiday....it would be more expensive to stay at home in the UK and buy the same amount ..!

I do realise that if I didn't smoke at all I would be really saving money ... but hey- it's my 'drug of choice' and it's still legal!

Thanks for the debate about the health risks of smoking. I never realised they were so dangerous.

I only wanted to know if I could bring some back or not. For the record, I have established that the 3200 limit applies and also that 200 cigarettes currently cost E25, which means I save about £467, which almost pays for my holiday. Result!:D
