How many cigarettes can I bring back from Madeira?

I was just wondering what the limit was for bringing cigarettes back from Madeira? Also, are cigarettes there much cheaper than the UK?

Thanks.

Same question, I don't smoke but hard up bro has asked me to bring tobacco flying back from Geneva Airport but staying in Chamonix for hols.

Actually, I was coming back from Milan a couple of months ago and tried to buy cigarettes at their aiport and was told I couldn't do it? Flying into Edinburgh airport? Anybody know why?

I'm wondering whether I should buy tobacco or cigs in a shop whilst abroad and just put them into my case?

Thanks for the link, which I have had a look at. Very useful. Any idea about costs?

if you are staying in the EU, you need to buy tax-paid cigarettes, not the duty-free ones at the airport. Even if they do have tax-paid ones, they will usually be much cheaper outside.

It's illegal to bring cigarettes back for anyone other than yourselves. Customs are entitled to ask you if the cigarettes are for personal consumption, and confiscate them if they are not, though for a carton or 2 this is extremely unlikely.

thanks Meester, I was only going to bring back about 200 (even that galls me, as a non smoker!!!) Trying to keep it fair for both my brothers, can I bring back 1 carton of cigarettes and a pack of tobacco?

I recently went to spain and i think the maximum you are allowed to bring back is 3200. A packet of 200 bensons cost me roughly £28.00

From the EU you can actually bring back as much tobacco or tobacco products as you like for your own use. It is up to you to justify how it is for your own use. But according to HMRC leaflets and web-sites you are more likely to be quizzed if you bring more than 3200 cigs and/or 3 kilo tobacco. I believe this figure was set after a judicial review.

The EU is a free trade area and cross-border shopping is quite permissible. It's more or less the same in the USA where cross-state shopping is common for one's own use.

I would deal with this by telling the brother that it is against the law to bring back cigarettes for someone else.
