Ask the dealer about delivery, if they don't have their own trailer/van/truck then they should be able to reccomend someone who does.
Means you can spend as long as you want at home trawling web sites and ringing round for the best insurance deal0 -
the dealer will need a certificate to tax it ! when we have bought cars we have had to provide the ins cert to the dealer so they could tax the car .This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

So yes, he lost our custom!
He could have worded it better, but he was correct if the car has no tax disc. You need a certificate of insurance to tax it before it can be driven legally.
If the car has tax then you will not need an insurance certificate.
Here are your options
For an untaxed vehicle:
*Use the dealers in-house service
*Go to a local high street broker (a rare thing these days) they will insure and issue a covernote
* ask the dealer to use their internet connection (or return home) and go to swiftcover† who alledgedly allow you to print off the certificate. (you may get some funny looks in the post office) - or do some research and find out which other internet insurers allow you to print the certificate.
*Arrange to insure the car on your return home and go back and pick the car up when your certificate has arrived in the post.
For taxed vehicles - you don't need a certificate, you can drive the car away as soon as you have paid on the phone or internet.
*Use the dealers in-house system
*Phone your chosen insurer
*Ask to use the dealers internet connection or go home to do it - insure your car with Tesco, Nationwide, Direct Line etc
*Go to a local high street broker
You might have a security issue with using your credit card on the car dealers computer, but it shouldn't be a problem- just ask if you can delete the temp internet files when you've finished. It's very unlikely the dealer will have a keylogger program running on his own computer.
To address your concerns of not getting the best deal, All insurers give a 14 day cancellation period, some of them nevertheless make an admin charge of upto £50. Some of them including Tesco, Direct Line and Nationwide have no admin charge. They are also among the cheapest anyway, so going with one of them will mean you can cancel your insurance if you find a cheaper quote.
†Swiftcover has an admincharge, so although I mentioned them earlier to print off your certificate, I'm pretty sure they do have a cancellation admin charge - something to consider.
Finally, don't forget that through quidco you can get Prudential (As cheap as Tesco etc) insurance with £75 cash back.... And they do pay the money, it takes 3 - 5 months to come through but you do get it. If you have not used quidco before, a few important tips:
1. Try to open your quidco account in the name of the person who will be the policy holder, and use a credit card in the policy holders name.
2. Delete all your cookies before visiting the quidco website, and clicking through to prudential.
3. If you normally use internet explorer for internet, and you don't use firefox, download firefox (free) and use firefox to visit quidco and click through to prudential.
* If you do have firefox installed and you generally surf with firefox, then use Internet Explorer for your quidco transaction.0
