I know nissan does 7 day cover with norwich union, this allows you to drive it home and either arrange a full policy with them or search 4 a new company.

OK, do an Internet search for several different makes of car, I'm sure there will be one company that's cheaper than the others based on your personal circumstances, take the number with you buy the car phone them up and you should be insured in no time....tell them you want to drive home straight away.

No car, new or used I've ever bought is ready to be driven away that day. Most will want to tax it/valet it/service or MOT it etc etc

My last 2 cars were, on both occasions. I just had to wait 30 minutes while they nipped to the Post Office to get the tax, which I used the time to call my insurance company.

If you lodge half a million pounds with the supreme court you do not require insurance and are covered to drive any car.

Sadly, that's probably not much help. :(
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Anyone can post so always exercise caution when acting on info

We don't yet even have a "supreme court"! (Due next year)
  • take your mobile and ring your insurance company and ask them to add you on a temporary basis to your exisisting policy

Or ask the people who you buy the car off if you can use their internet

Or see if you can negociate that they drop you home in the new car and you return them home in your existing car or whatever

Just a little update, thanks for all your advice.

We didn't find a car today, however, I a salesman mentioned that he would arrnage insurnace, to which I replied, no, I will arrange it. He quizzed me on what sort of insurance I would arrange and I advised I had done my research and that many companies offered drive away insurance.

He laughed at me and said "that's not true, you don't know what you're talking about, you need an actual certificate of which we will arrange".

So yes, he lost our custom!

    Back out hunting tomorrow..
