I have owned a 1.6 petrol Berlingo for 5 years and have averaged 33 mpg. Around town I get around 26mpg. Top speed affects the mpg greatly. Recently I have done 3 runs from London to Birmingham and back (about 250 miles) with these results:
1. Max speed 70 mph 31.6 mpg (roof bars fitted)
2. Max speed 60 mph 47.6 mpg (no roof bars)
3. Max speed 55 mph 50.2 mpg (no roof bars, but fully loaded on way back and use of aircon)

That's intersting about the speed Fred.
How have you measured the MPG by the way?
I do get the impression that it's working harder than it should at 75mph. To me it seems like it needs a 6th gear as 70ph = 3250rpm.
On LPG (which gives a bit less mpg), the worst I have got is 26 MPG. The best 32 mpg and average is 29.5 mpg. The odd thing being that it doesn't increase greatly on the motorway. But perhaps it's because I am working it too hard?? I might do better at a steady 55? (Although the journey may seem never ending?)
The LPG set up may not be spot on for motorway drivingo, which may account for the small difference in mpg?0 -
...there's nutters in all walks of life
given that i have never seen a sensible one amung them (they all weave down the middle of the two lanes when the traffic is moving at 50mph+) i fear its infectious and i may become one of them and then shortly after become just another stastistic! :eek:The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

I keep a spreadsheet to calculate each fill up and my overall mpg. On the three runs to Birmingham I filled up at the start and end of the journey to get an exact mpg. I didn't record the time taken but it didn't seem to take much longer when I kept my max speed down. In future I hope to time the journey to see how much longer it takes at lower max speeds.0 -

thats a much better idea than my current mental calcualtion at each fill up.The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

mainly edinburgh city bypass early rush hour both ways so 40-60mph most of the way.
sometimes go up to aberdeen to visit relatives when i do go fairly fast but thats only 2 or 3 times a year plus dog shows within a hundred miles maybe ten times a year.
you can get 60 on the edinburgh bypass at rush hour? amazing....work permit granted!0 -
went to local citroen dealer today only to find they have no Berlingo's at all. neither old or new model. and peugeot was the same with the Partner Combi.
they are both hoping to have demonstrators some time next week. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

I've had a Berlingo for over 6 years. It's the old 1.9 diesel engine which does over 40mpg whatever I do. But FIL has the 2.0HDi, 3 years old, which never does below 50mpg. The 2.0 has now been replaced with the 1.6HDi which is even more economical with no loss of power. That engine is, I believe, also in the new MkII.
Virtually all Berlingos ever sold are diesel as they are so much more economical than the petrol. I see no point in buying a petrol model, especially as the performance in the newer diesels is so good.
The Berlingo and Partner are indeed identical, other than minor specification details. The Berlingo is more popular because its price tends to be lower due to Citroen's better showroom deals. They are all made in Vigo in Spain rather than the main Citroen factories, and have excellent reliability.
As for the Kangoo, I test drove one when I bought my car, and have had one on hire in Spain. There is no doubt that the Berlingo is a far better car to drive, and better finished and equipped. It has always outsold the Kangoo several times over. It sometimes seems every other car in Spain is a Berlingo!0 -

There are a few on here with the petrol model, so not sure how you come to the conclusion that only diesel models were ever sold?
Economy - the newer diesels - yes. The old 1.9 was the same as the 1.6 petrol on the economy (I have the original brochure from when I bought it), yet the diesel had only 75 bhp, whereas the petrol is 110 bhp.
Add to that the fact that diesel is now 15p per litre more and I think you'll find it's more expensive to run.0
