we have the a 2003, 1.6 petrol Berlingo - we opted for the petrol version, as according to the specs it had better mpg than the diesel models
not sure on what mpg we are getting, will have to take note, and get back to you
Have looked at the new versions out, and tbh dont like the interior of the Berlingo as much, so we are going for the peugeot Teepee

The Renault isn't the favourite here - the Pug does have the superior engine.
Not sure if you know too much about towing, but check out
www.towsafe.co.uk
www.towsure.co.uk
The major thing to remember when choosing a towcar is weight of the trailer(caravan) shouldn't exceed 3/4 the weight of the car. So have a look on the makers websites, for quoted towing limits.
Then check caravan makes, as well.
As for the dog cage issue, why not be a REAL Moneysaver & buy an ex Police Mondeo K9 unit!!!?? There are still some around, although they are operating Focus estates instead.o
It'll be mega miles - 100,000 - but fully fitted, with quality cages, roof vent & be 4-5 yers old & £1500 ish!!??
You can check your local www.british-car-auctions.co.uk for centres, which havbe Police sales. Or www.woma.co.uk have them also.

i have checked out the ex-police cars but the ones i have seen all have the back seats ripped out and i occasionally do need to carry passengers that don't have 4 legs. (i am also put off by the high mileage) they are the business for carrying dogs tho! if i could afford an everyday car and a dog car i probably be seriously considering one!The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
I have the Berlingo 1.6 petrol from new, but it's now an LPG conversion.
I know several people who have the newer 1.6 HDI engines and these do produce very good MPG returns.
Like Flea says, when I got mine they only did a very basic 1.9d engine that offered exactly the same MPG as the 1.6 petrol, but with poorer performance and slightly dearer or a 2.0HDI, which was alot dearer.
Can't fault the car 4 years on and yes it's the same as the Peugeot, but the price tag certainly wasn't the same!! I also looked at the Kangoo and the Fiat Doblo, but both were a good few thousand more.0 -
One thing about the HDi engines I've found, economical they may be up to around 60 to 65mph, but go much faster than that and mpg plummets so much more so than some other diesels.
Brothers 307 SW 2.0HDi (136 bhp) makes 38mpg at an indicated 85mph, where my car, BMW 320d 163bhp makes 48mpg. Driven in the 50 to 65mph range and they are about the same on fuel consumption.
According to tests the VAG TDi engines hold onto very good mpg figures at higher speeds too.
If you do a lot of motorway driving there is a fuel saving to be had with a more powerful engine better suited to this kind of driving.0 -
not a lot of motorway miles.
mainly edinburgh city bypass early rush hour both ways so 40-60mph most of the way.
sometimes go up to aberdeen to visit relatives when i do go fairly fast but thats only 2 or 3 times a year plus dog shows within a hundred miles maybe ten times a year. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

OK that profile would mean the smaller engine is the better choice if fuel consumption takes priority.
The drawback is, towing a caravan demands the bigger engine for more comfortable performance and I would almost expect mpg while towing to be better with the larger engine.0 -
i'm goign to go up to a citroen dealer tomorrow and have alook. will have a wander around osme other car dealers too, see if theres something i haven't considered. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0
