I can particularly recommend Alpkit's (www.alpkit.com) self-inflating roll mats. They're amazing! Really light and just takes one puff to blow them up.
I have one of these. They do not self inflate, and they are notoriously difficult to roll back up tightly. Just to use the words self-inflate, and having to blow them up manually, kinda defeats any purpose. Granted they are comfortable.Only Linux make is possible!0 -

I find the best way (or second best anyway!!) to stay warm in a tent at night is to wear a hat to bed. Yes it does scare my hubby BUT IT WORKS!! I have now convinced several fellow campers of this and get big thanks for it. Yes you may scoff, but try it - what have you got to lose (apart from your dignity???) but do remeber to take it off b4 your morning trip to the loo........
We also have a thin fleece blanket on top of the air bed. I am usually cold anyway but this stops me getting miserable (and consequently everyone else - if I suffer, they suffer!) Have been camping now for 15 years, with 4 / 5 other families and we all have a great time, can't recommend it enough. The kids (6 - 17) all enjoy mixing with the others and we have days out as a group and also seperately (vital for the sanity!)

Quite a few people have asked how good particular tents are, a site you might find useful for accurate tent reviews is:
(the forum won't let me paste links so if you google UK Campsite it should be one of the first links you see and then click on Tent Reviews at the top of their home page)
The rest of the site I find invaluable for hints and tips and the campsite reviews are also really helpful, they've never led us wrong yet!0 -
Gizmo - I wear a hat, scarf, gloves, socks x2 and still end up freezing! I dont have the best circulation! - As for taking the hat off in the morning..NO WAY! until the sun shines, the hat is on!!

What are you sleeping on? We have an inflated airbed with a flat airbed underneath it, then a fleecy blanket under a sheet, us (me in full length PJ's), with our duvet to go on top of us!! I am cold most of the time generally but this seems to work (plus my hat in bed of course!!)
YES I do get the mick taken out of me for being cold all the time but that's just the way it is! Think I may have reptile blood in me, need to soak up the sun to recharge.....

Can anyone recommend a good two burner stove, that comes in a carry case, and takes the smaller Gas cartidges such as the CP250 Cartridge Campingaz ones, or something a similar size, that we can carry easy without transport.0

I had a chuckle to myself when I saw what peoples ideas of camping is and what they "need".. I have a one man lightwave tent, a backpack of essentials and good boots. I camp in the middle of no where. it costs me nothing.
You should have been behind a guy at the till in the camping shop this time last year. He bought a huge tent, and every possible *thing* you could get to put in it. Cooker stands, camp beds, tables, chairs, lighting, cooker, fridge, toilet tent, porta potty- and, wait for it- a carpet. A CARPET!! FGS.
Having spent in excess of a grand, he went on to make a comment about the £900 worth of rig he'd bought from there the last season  as if it was a single use thing!
But even better than that, the guy behind the till asked if they were away for a few weeks...the reply? No, just the weekend.:eek:
I needed to sit down. Then I needed to slap the person who thought up carpets for tents with a wet kipper. :cool:Only dead fish go with the flow...0 -
Hi all, I've bought a flat fold bucket bbq from Homebase to take camping and was wondering if I could use a lidded roaster on top of it for one pot cooking. Its the enamel type that I usually use in the oven at home. Has anyone tried this? Did it work without poisoning the family?!0
