I don't have an account with FD, but what I can say is that although I too very rarely need to contact my bank, the one occasional time would make it worthwhile. Ironically it was all to do with switching banks, but the last time I contacted HSBC it was a royal pain in the bum with lots of holding, call centre, department pass-me-on games etc.

Anywhere where you can talk to a human being near-instantly who can actually assist you, is probably well worth it even if it's only on a few occasions.

I'm tempted to get an account with FD, although I won't be able to credit £1500 per month from a salary, however, I do have enough savings to pay in £1500 per month min for at least 6 months - perhaps via cheque or something. Do you think this would work so I could get the £100 incentive?

I have kept on hearing good words about them on here and after my nightmare with Lloyds TSB to get them to send the card statement to my address.

Will it also mean I can use the fancy machines in HSBC?

In last week's MoneySaving email, it says that the £100 offer for new First Direct accounts ended 30 June. Sure enough, on www.firstdirect.com they don't mention the offer (well not on the first few pages anyway).

EDIT: Sorry, I thought you were talking about the £100 to join First Direct. The £100 offer to leave First Direct is still there.
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

    No it won't, username :(

It has to be 1.5k a month from a salary BACS payment (unless you are self employed).

I applied for an account with First Direct but they refused my application. This is disheartening as it means I may be stuck with A&L, who are, to be frank, utter cretins.

Whoops - I've known about this offer for ages and today finally commited to signing up and noticed the sign off offer is gone :) I would have moved for the better but may wait until next time now.

What is the big deal about Current account interest rates, who uses a current account as a savings account?

I do :) My wife's A&L account gives her a 8.5% on balances upto 2500, so I keep close to that amount every month :) Get close to a tenner in interest :T

I don't like First Direct. They told me I had qualified for the £100 to leave. Then they changed their mind and said I couldn't have it. They even apologised for misleading me. I have it in writing!

However, they will not budge on giving me the £100 for leaving. I tried them, didn't like the online service and want to return to my previous bank.

So it seems they are great for every day banking, but cross them at your peril!
