I have been with First Direct since 2002 and they are fab. I have a savings account and ISA with them and can't fault them at all. Any interest that I earn just gets swept into the ISA.

Truly they are there on Christmas Day, I rang them once to wish them a Happy Christmas and they were all chomping on mince pies. I didn't mind when they laughed because I had put my cheque book in the wash which had some Vanish In-Wash Stain remover in it (it works because my cheques came out totally white). Everyone is really friendly - tbh I don't know why people banking with anyone else.

I used to pay my salary into them but I was able to keep my account when I was made redundant and now it just gets my JSA payments and HB payments which are considerably less than £1500. I just wish they would give me £100 for being such a good customer:rotfl:

Sorry, I meant do you have to pay to withdraw cash with your FD debit/cash card?

Only if the machine says you do (and most don't).

FD themselves do not make a charge.

Perhaps it is the lack of interest paid to customers funding the mince pies! (and the staffing costs for Christmas workers!)

They pay interest on most accounts, just not the 1st account.

As others have said, moving money into a savings account is little hassle for around 5% interest

I just moved to first direct and will be staying with them. They are probably the only bank that could get away with offering people money to leave! I like the fact that they are paying timewasters to go away if it means no phone queues and better service for me.

How much interest are you actually going to get anyway, even at 8% if you keep an average of £750 in your current account that's only £48 interest after tax. Their faster payment service is already set to the max £10,000 so you can move money about instantly anyway.

So far between myself and gf we have used FD, Barclays (personal, premier and business), HSBC, A&L, Natwest (business), Nationwide, Cahoot, Abbey and Northern Rock. FD are easily the best, and in my opinion well worth losing the current account interest.

For me the best bit is that their foreign ex rates for sending money overseas are often better than the quotes I receive from dedicated currency brokers.

I could do with some advice about First Direct if someone could help? :j

Basically I phoned up today to ask about their First account. I want to open one but my credit rating is very low I'm sure I'll get rejected.

However I easily earn more than the £1500 per month that's part of the account requirements, and also I'm keen on opening one of their savings accounts (but can't do it without opening a current account first).

Any idea if there's any way to get round this? I can deposit a lump sum in a savings account, and I earn good money, it's just I'm in the ridiculous situation where my credit rating is holding me back from getting the best savings and current account options!!

I'm cash rich, credit score poor, so to speak!
  • Cant help on the last post, just another FD fanboy adding how great they are compared to every other bank i have used..

Have been with them approaching 8 years now an would never switch! Speak to them 24/7 365....

    (halifax, A&L, B&B, IF, Egg, )

Really nice to hear such good reviews about a bank. I've never heard so many people stand up for a bank :) However, one of the main points I've seen is that they are available on the phone 24/7. With the advent of internet banking do we really require to speak to them? I bank with A&L, Halifax and Natwest and all of them provide excellent online banking (I'm sure FD offers the same). I think I only had to call Halifax this year because of the absurd charges on my account for going £13 past the overdraft limit  (my mistake was on holiday)

Perhaps, people could let us know the good points of FD and the features they offer that have been so helpful that you wouldn't consider leaving the bank. I'm sure if I found that FD offers a useful feature not offered by other banks I wouldn't leave them as well :) Educate the other members :)
