To be fair to the newbies, we don't know how many the handful that don't read the stickies actually represent. It could be 50%, or it could be 0.5%. We never see the "silent majority".
And 0.5% in a blind panic is not too bad.
Hi ZTD ... you have just made me feel like a politician - "my comments being an extract" not my full speech.
In no way was I seeking to be unfair to newbies - I refute that entirely - I was indeed (as I would hope my full post showed) trying to address how best they might be helped in being provided with access to the SOA web page under discussion in the most effective way.
I concede, as I did in my full post, that my experience here is limited, but it is extensive I assure you on other fora.
On this forum - to address your point about percentages, what I have witnessed in the vast majority of cases is a thread being opened for the first time with an outline of a debt problem - more or less immediately followed by a pre-existing member suggesting that the starting point would be the completion of an SOA.
I am happy, more than happy, to be told that the posts I have read where that has happened are NOT in the majority, but are in the minority - if I am in error I apologise in advance.
But it was from within that - genuinely held - perspective that I then made my self conceded rather fulsome comments - from which you have taken a shortened extract and I regret inherently accused me of being unfair to newbies - which is the absolute opposite of what I intended - and I hope you have no objection to my regret that you may have inferred otherwise.
It would be a reputation I would not seek to gain.

they can change the face of the world.

Hi everybody.
Over the last few weeks we have had a number of "troll" attacks on the boards.
What is a Troll? A troll is a person that posts deliberately provocative, nasty or hurtful comments on threads. They may be a person with no previous connection to the board or someone that has created a pseudonym to get their point made.
If you should get a comment made on any thread you post asking for help and advice please realise this comment is not directed at you personally.
We really are all a lovely bunch here (oops, modest, sorry) so please ignore these nasty comments and continue to post here as normal.
what should i do if i get a comment made on my thread?
firstly do not respond to the comment as this invariably is what the person wants. At the bottom of the post, on the left hand side is a red "warning" triangle. Click this and then "send" the message that comes up. This will report the message to abuse who will review it's content and delete it.
The person we had this morning was particularly vile and nasty and please believe me is an extreme rarity here.
Above all PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THE BOARDS. THIS SITE IS AN ASSET TO SO MANY, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT FEELS THE WORLD IS FALLING IN ON YOU. THERE IS SUCH A WEALTH OF ADVICE HERE TO BE HAD THAT THE COMMENTS OF ONE MUST NOT DETER YOU FROM AVAILING YOURSELF OF THE KNOWLEDGE HERE!!!!
It is testament to the work that martin has done and continues to do that so many people give their time knowledge and experience freely to others, without judgement, to lift people out of the depths of debt crisis
PLEASE DO NOT LET THE ACTIONS OF THE MINORITY RUIN THAT.
Kind wishes
P
refreshed as the other was getting to long because evryone is wonderful and helpful!!!.:DIf many little people, in many little places, do many little things,

Its not you Numpty, I feel the same way.type bump.
Are people saying now that we shouldn't provide newbies with links to the SOA calculatorWhen I was a newbie I admit that I never even bothered looking at the stickies - so if I could miss them then so could a lot of others, sometimes a person is just so distraught at the amount of debt they have they are going to go into a blind panic and post and won't even bother looking at a sticky.

Morning Horace,
How's things going?
Babbit xOpinions are like bottom holes, we all have one

Exactly the opposite Horace - and any posts involving ZTD (with respect to you ZTD) and I are a complete irrelevance to the central point.
Which is that raised by Nomad25 here:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=13855245&postcount=1870
How best do members who know there way around provide another member (newbie or indeed otherwise) to the site which allows them to post an SOA?
3 options have been raised:
1: Direct them to a sticky - which includes the link.
2: One involving Clariman, either thru' agreement with MSE about sponsorship, or by a link in the referral threads.
3: That raised by Numpty, and with which I agree - namely that existing members can if they so wish, hold the link to the SOA site on their own PC and post that when the link is needed - directly into the thread concerned - without the need for anyone to go anywhere else.
