I find that if you can get cheap flights somewhere then the places to stay are expensive. And if you find a cheap place to stay then flights are expensive :(

Take a look at this camp in Cornwall, we've been there twice when the kids were small. Looking at the prices a 4 berth caravan is about £449 around 13th August for a week. You could try bartering the price, this has worked for me several years ago, but I cant promise it does now. Lovely campsite, think they do take tents there if this price is a bit steep. Loads to do in the vicinity, Flambards, Lands End, St Michaels Mount etc etc. The kids will love it.

  • Have a look at RyanAir website. Just found flights from Durham Tees Valley to Girona leaving on 16th August returning on 23rd August for £14.99 each way including taxes. Bit of a drive from Edinburgh but get to Darlington by train from Edinburgh very easily and pretty cheap. Plenty of cheap accomodation on the coast around Girona I would have thought.
  • RyanAir from Bristol leaving 20th August to 27th August to Girona £34 including taxes each. Again search for hotels/accomodation should find you something.

Had a look at Girona accomodation, far too expensive :( I think I might just have to give up!

  • Drea, I would suggest considering camping as a viable option. I have never, ever been an "outdoor" type, so when my partner suggested taking the kids camping, I really, really didn't want to go. However, we packed up and went for 2 days and had the most brilliant time. The campsite we stayed in was surrounded by woods, which were perfectly safe for the children to play in, making dens etc and also there was plenty of space for ball games etc. As it was only a couple of miles from the coast we were able to spend time on the beach as well. And the best thing was it cost £13 per night plus the entertainment (ie the woods and beach) were completely free. A big bonus was that we were able to light a camp fire at night and toast marshmallows, which the children really enjoyed. I think you can have a lot of fun doing this - I know you can't guarantee the sunshine, but somehow it's far more fun in the rain in a tent than in a house! If you can borrow equipment so much the better, if not you can pick up a good second-hand tent on e-bay for £50 quid or so. If you buy your own you can then go at weekends - you don't have to venture far to have a complete break. BTW the name of the campsite we stayed at was breck farm near Bodham in Norfolk, which I got from the ukcampsite website, which is very useful. Hope you enjoy your trip whatever you do.
  • have you thought of house swapping?
all you need is the travel then.

I've thought about house swapping but don't think I could do it as we just rent ours.

There is a company called Eden Roc who do some lovely Villa's. A slight problem is that they are a french company so their website is only in french

I hired a Villa that sleeps 4 in Narbonne le plage (south france) at the end of May last year for £150. Flights with ebay were £75 return for 2 people and car hire was £75 for the week. Although it may be better to check out their villa's in the north of france, and drive over (ferry is so much cheaper than flying! And you dont have to lug your bags miles around the airport :D )

    Hope this helps :D
