I don't have a weight problem but my OH has yoyo dieted since I've known him. What he needs to do is change his attitude to food but that's too big a job for lil ol me. What has helped him start to eat better and therefore lose weight is a food diary.

Basically, you find out how many calories you need for your height and weight (we did this on a google search). You come up with a figure for maintaining your present weight - you just (!) have to eat less than that.

Then we went to https://www.fitday.com and started a diary. You put in EVERYTHING you eat and drink and it calculates the calories. It's american so not totally straightforward but it's free and I couldn't find a free Brit one. After a few days he could see that cutting down on butter would save x and only have two glasses of wine would save y calories. In theory you could use it every day but I can't imagine many people keeping it up.

For a week or two though it's not too much trouble and it tells you how much fat you're eating, what vitamins you're OK and not OK on. Best thing is that you can do it just eating normal food - which is what you need to do to keep the weight off. Like uf353432 said, you need to change the way you eat all the time, not just for the short term. Sooooo easy for me to say,I know 8)

Not EVERY day but if you look at it i didnt have too many calories, i have no sugar or milk in coffee, LOADS of salad with the kebab which is purely grilled chicken breast so all the fat runs off. Ive seen them cook them there. I had a stressful day yesterday!
I am 5'7", weigh about 10 stone, and am probably just about in the 'very active' category. I find thats what I need to do. In fact since doing more weights at the gym, and therefore building more muscle, i often get RAVENOUS.
I cant remember where i found it, but if you type in the question 'how many calories do i need a day' into https://www.ask.co.uk you should get things that help you calculate how many calories you need. I did it last year and it said I needed about 3500 calories a day for my level of activity , weight and height. I think the problem with dieting is that food is essential so to diet you are denying yourself somethng that your body needs. I dont buy chocolate biscuits, i make cakes occasionally but dont buy them, only buy biscuits to make the base of a cheesecake, that way i wont eat them. 'My' chocolate is tesco value plain chocolate, plain has less fat and sugar because there is more cocoa, and i think if i ate a whole bar i would be sick :-XI snack at regular times and have a vigorous workout twice a week, plus 4 flights of stairs and 3 demanding kids. I walk where possible instead of taking the bus.
In building muscle I may gain a bit of weight but i am more slender, and muscle burns more energy.
I would suggest cut out 99% of processed food, and exercise, exercise, exercise is the BEST answer. You need to pass good habits on to your child too, and kids dont like it when mummy doesnt eat ;)

  • There is a connection between obesity and salt intake because everyone who is overweight is sensitive to salt. If you reduce your salt/sodium intake you will lose weight by losing excess water that salt is holding in your body. - No hunger, no dieting, no cost, no drugs, no side-effects, no visits to the doctor - or to the gym!...(o:

Lose weight by eating less salt! - Go on! - Try it! - Surely it's worth a try!
