Yes. As I said, I took it over to the other side of the room, plugged it into a single socket, spent a good while searching for an ethernet cable long enough to reach, and all three lights lit up.
Previously, only two lit up (ethernet and power). The other difference in plugging it in there, was that the homeplug upstairs (the one attached to the router) could now see the downstairs homeplug. It showed its Mac address, and I put the password in, which it accepted.
However, under the Speed column, there is just a question mark. I've no idea how to make it connect to the internet.0 -
I can't.
The router is upstairs. I don't have a telephone point downstairs next to the rogue desktop.
you don't need the telephone point to move the router next to the rogue PC, the problem is getting a connection between the two, connecting to teh internet is irrelevant in that scenario. If it can assign an IP when connected by ethernet you then know it's the wireless adapter that is at fault, if it can't assign via ethernet then you know it's the ip setup of the desktop0 -

Good then that is progress, leave it like that, the next step would be confirming your pc's can see the router. shut down both and turn on the rogue, when booted type ipconfig, if it doesn't look similar to below, post back

Yes, rogue PC is connected OK (for the next few days anyway...) so ipconfig is fine and normal.0 -

sorry?, post before that said you had no internet connection on it?
ps can i borrow your crystal ball to see if my dvdrw will play up in next few days?
See # 46
However, it does work now. I did a winsock fix, rebooted and it was fine. Who knows?
If your dvdrw works perfectly most of the time, but suddenly and intermittently stops working for no apparent reason; if it happens frequently - at least once a month - then my crystal ball suggests that you know it will play up again, and probably soon. It's particularly frustrating for you because your other dvdrw works perfectly well, and doesn't regularly and inexplicably lie on its back waving its feet feebly in the air.
My apologies if I confused you. The Internet connection is working on the rogue PC, after I reset the router and fiddled a little further.
However I've removed the homeplug from it since I can't get it to work. If you've any suggestions on how to get that system up and running to eliminate future, infuriating problems with my internet connection on that PC, I'd be most grateful.0 -
well no the other dvdrw is playing up as well, gonna be some software glitch that will take ages to track down, i hate them.
so you are using the wireless now?, hopefully it will be sorted then but from my experience in wifi maybe not.
The home plugs say they don't work off surge protected gang sockets but i've got one that does so suppose its down to quality of wiring at socket. ie spur off a spur seems to give them problems but i've only had one of those come up
Personally i tend to turn off dhcp and assign all addresses manually and its very rare any segment goes down.click here to achieve nothing!0
