How do i defrag VISTA

Hi sorry but not used to using VISTA and cannot find anywhere to defrag it. Laptop is going sooooo slow i have deleted temp files but cant see where to defrag, not like the one i'm used to hmmmmm. Thanks in advance

It does it automatically.

If you must, type 'defrag' after clicking the start button.

emmalancs - if you go to start/computer and right-click on the hard drive, it is there under properties, similar to where it is in xp

yep go to computer right click on the drive you want to defrag go to properties then tools and its in there......be warned this can take ages so sit back and have a hamlet

The trouble with the built in defrag program in Vista is you can't see whats going on.
There is a freeware defrag program from Auslogics that I use from time to time,
may be worth a go.

For freeware, I'm a fan of Jkdefrag, very simple, speedy and gets the job done.

XP and Vista usually use NT-File System on the hard disk, which unlike the FAT file system doesn't need regular defragging. It's unlikely that the cause of your slowdown is due to fragmentation, so defragging probably won't make any noticeable difference. A more likely explanation for the slowdown is some memory resident program that's been installed, so check through the task manager and identify all the programs running in the background. If there's any you don't need all the time, find an option to stop them running on startup

sorry m8 but that is simply not true, both systems are prone to fragmentation cluster sizes don't match file sizes, like saying your car boot will take all combinations of luggage.

NTFS is not as prone to fragmentation as FAT, but it is not immune either. Even Microsoft considered fragmentation with NTFS to be significant enough a problem that they revised the defragmenter completely to make it a pseudoautomatic type scheduled defragger. The downsides being the lack of a GUI/drive map, slow defrag speed, lesser control etc. In contrast to the older scheduled/manual defrag software, these days the trend is towards fully automatic defraggers. These are highly effective and convenient, especially for multiple drives, as they run in the background and defrag in real-time using idle system resources, as necessary and automatically. For Vista, it's also useful to have defraggers that recognize that the presence of shadow copy services on a volume.
