I just thought i would share my little knowledge!!
i found this out when i had a friend build me a PC.......i wanted Vista ultimate which in PC world is currently 229 quid!!! so i said he needs to take that into account with buget....but he said why would you pay that when you can get it alot cheaper
and heres how oh and its completly legal.......you buy the OEM version which is basically a single licence for one pc only.......so in other words you can't put it on ony other computer EVER! so as long as you keep that pc for a few years and upgrade it you can use ultimate for the life of that pc however if you build a new PC then you have to buy a new disc
The price of Vista ultimate OEM well from Aria.co.uk its 94 quid saving your self a good 130 quid
and if your after office pro then thats only 160 quid (pc wprld 280 quid)
so if you want the software and want to stay legal then BUY OEM stuff and not what you get in the shops on the high street

If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

Thanks for that post, I think one of the downsides to buying oem software is that you only get support for the software from the seller and not from Microsoft, is that right? You can't con an honest man!0

support as in what way?? i still get all the updates via windows update etc....and i have never had to ring microsoft for any help
but seeing as i hold a licence i would still get full support
all OEM is is 1 licence for 1 PC period the stuff you buy in PC world is 1 licence at a time but can be put on any new pc as long as the other one is no longer usedIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I find the support from other internet users to be about 100,000.000 times better than any support from the actual developers.0

If you buy an OEM copy, you have to agree to the system builder's license which as far as I remember states that you undertake to provide all support for the product.
An OEM copy is a great way to save money though, provided you don't mind the limitations.0 -

Well quite. It's just something some might need to consider.0

Yeah it's true when was the last time you looked for support from Microsoft? It's a hugely over-hyped "advantage" to full retail price software. Getting support from MS is a bit like going to the dentist; except it's more painful and you have to wait longer.0

The point is that there are differences between oem software and retail boxed software, those differences may not be worth paying the extra for but thats what these forums are for.You can't con an honest man!0
