OMG I thought it was just me. I have got this breadmaker too and have made loads of loaves with them all coming out too hard round the sides and crispy, and also the paddle sticks in my loaf too... every time!! I wish I had chosen a different one now. My hm bread is only used for toast in our house now. I thought maybe it was the receipe I was using so I have tried lots including oil ones and butter ones. I bought it from Amazon in Sept 07. :(

Hurrah! Evidence it's not just me then.
    I'm not rubbish.

Seriously though, I don't need a loaf shape (there's only me) so I will just use it to make pizza dough and get bread as far as dough/risen then I'll cook it in the oven next time... see how that goes.

    :)

Are you sure you're not using too much salt in there? Salt will stop bread rising. Even using salted butter instead of unsalted can make a difference :)
    It's a packet.

I haven't tried making a loaf by measuring things out yet. Made pizza dough like that and it's fine (but very slow to do the measure/check/measure/read it again/check/double-check/say it out loud... put it in process I have to go through to make sure I am doing it right)

Having used an MR for years I bought the Panny when the MR finally died earlier this year.

Now, I didn't know at the time that the MR was simply "OK" but the first two fantastic loaves with the Panny showed me what I'd been missing.

I was a "it can't be that good" watcher of the Panny enthusiasts on this Board - but having converted, they're right. It really is a cut above the other BMs ... certainly the MR.

Sorry - that doesn't help with your dilemma, but do consider a Panny when you come to replace the MR.

2 months by now. Bought it from an online electrical retailer. First one from Argos, when I opened it was 2nd hand and had the spoons missing. And they had no more stock, so went online to buy it.

I'm going to suggest that you return it as it is not fit for purpose under the sale of goods act.

Well, isn't that subjective. Couldn't they say "we have 1000s working perfectly, you're just a rubbish bread making person who is obviously not following instructions properly"?

I know it doesn't help you but having read the forums I decided that my first BM was going to be a Panny. A lot more expensive but so worth it. Today I have made 50/50 dough in it and turned it into bread rolls for the lunches next week. They have risen and cooked so well. Sometimes it is worth waiting a bit longer to save and buy a really good one. (I got mine off Ebay 30 quid cheaper than shops).

Why do you not try and return it to the online store, if they refuse, email MR, you may be surprised, and do mention the online reviews of this machine, even give them links or the websites, you will not be first, I am sure of that to contact them over this breadmaker.

I did this some months ago with my blender, it was cr*p, Argos wouldn't refund me so I emailed Tefal, and they sent a box and a carrier to collect and refunded me...worth a try.

Don't use pre-done mixes! My bread is perfect every time in my bread maker. Just make sure you use fresh ingredients and use strong flour.
